Once again we are heading to our favorite club for metal shows in Tel -Aviv, the Gagarin club, at the 27th of August.
This day had gathered some of the best local Core/Metal Core bands; it was truly an interesting night.
This day had gathered some of the best local Core/Metal Core bands; it was truly an interesting night.
The first one to get on the stage was the CHEMICAL CATASTROPHY, this is some kind of phenomenon that shouldn't be recognized and encouraged and I will shortly explain why.
A group of young boys who attend to almost every local show, at least some of them. They had become friends with most of the local scene, and suddenly have the urge to have their own band. With none of them playing with any kind of semblance of song structure, without seemingly knowing any basics of music; they are truly some kind of catastrophe. There is no beat or melody, there is no sense on what you hear because there's no genre to identify them with, and it's pure chaos.
Somehow the audience is completely happy about it, at least some of them, and it looks like they have their own group of people to support this kind of madness. But still, there's a place to provide entertainment for your friends, this could be at your backyard, at the garage or whatever place you and your friends hang out, but that's apparently not reason enough to push yourself through to the stage intent on 'entertaining' dozens of people. Learn to play some riffs and do some good rehearsals before you get on the stage; otherwise you're just there to make fun of yourself and hurt someone else's ears!
The next band to get up was the MADE BY PAST; just another Metalcore band I might say, but they managed to surprise me, since the last time I'd seen them live, it was a long time ago. since then they'd changed and regrouped for good, the scream vocalist Liron Avital looks like a high school boy, he looks like he doesn't fit at all to this kind of genre, but just give him couple of seconds to get to his part and he will blow your mind with his growls and screams.
Clean vocals performed by Itay Aviv is pretty impressive too, very contrast to Liron's vocals which contributes to the show and makes it more interesting. Guitar performances were accurate and energetic played by Danny Rips and Jonathan Levi. On bass Nir Schwartz gave his full potential on the stage, but the back vocal performance was embarrassing and full with mess ups, and it wasn't even his fault.
At this moment I had noticed that something is terribly wrong, the sound problems at Gagarin Club are not new or surprising, but this evening it has crossed all of the possible lines. Start with the small things, Nir couldn't manage to perform back vocals completely because the mic stand was falling apart, literally. All the possible attempts to fix it didn't work out.
Have to mention that Liron's and Itay's performance could be heard only for about 60% of the time, again, heard! The awful imbalance between left and right monitors was terribly confusing, either you hear the right side too much and the left side is completely muted and vice versa. I can't say that it didn't have any impact on their overall performance. Though it was still very energetic and the crowd looked like it had a great time.
LET US BE SPOKEN, yes, indeed another Metalcore band you might say if you judge only by their recorded materials. But you may also be surprised, because there's a different side to this coin if you look at their live performances. I haven't seen such energy in other bands.
The dynamics in the group is amazing, the calm and static guitar and back vocals performance by Asaf Harpaz is a big contrast to energetic and crazy Yuri Bikhman on guitar, and May Khon on bass. But all this cannot be compared to the insane, charismatic, driving attitude of Nitzan Bochnik, the lead singer, making the whole experience entertaining and unusual. At this night, the sound wasn't welcoming for LET US BE SPOKEN either, but it didn't stop them at all, even made the band more insane; Nitzan literally climbed on the wall, and jumped into the mosh pit with the crowd.
After many attempts to fix the problem, the bands that had left to close the show came to realize that they have no choice but to continue with this terrible sound, so the guys took their show to the next level, with a quote, "at least let the crowd have fun" from this point, the show gone crazy, the energy was off the charts.
Suited up, like a wedding band, or maybe prom kings, ADAMAS just had to surprise once again, I have to take some of my words back, due to their last performance being reviewed, the lead singer Orel Levy has been called a weeping girl while performing his clean vocals.
I came to understanding that this kind of performance has to be done like this because, their emotional impact carrying in their lyrics and music, therefore, in a second view, the cry-baby look kind of works out. Although, this night the show was different also, the overflowing feeling in the atmosphere, paced up and energized the music, the show was less mellow and more heavy this time, these guys gave their all on this stage.
You save the best for the last, and this time had saved for the beast itself to step on the stage, CANINE just like a terrifying werewolf threatening to slay your throat. This beastly band has a lot to offer and their live show is not something you don't want to miss, especially that night when there were no limits, this experience had just left me in shock.
First of all the leader of the group, Ben Saada, his immense voice is phenomenal, like a dire wolf he growls at the crowd, meanwhile, his clean vocal abilities are also very impressive. There's a trendy thing going on among the locals, is to jump to the dance floor and perform with the crowd, although it go a little bit kitschy lately, still, it's bounding with the crowd cannot be mistaken. While Eliav Torjman jumps to the crowd with his guitar, Saada couldn't hold himself back, the crazy atmosphere pumped the air with energy. Those whom left the show earlier had missed an insane show!
So, after so many mess ups and equipment failures, how come some of the bands had found the spirit to crash the stage? Maybe it comes from the principle of "the show must go on" while there's nothing to lose and we have to continue to entertain the crowd. This kind of attitude makes them true and professional musicians; on the other hand, the club shows the opposite.
As much as we all had fun, I do not wish for any musician to run in to such incident as them that night.
