The concert was a very interesting one for myself as I consider myself a TYPE O fan, but I couldn't tell you the verse to any of their songs and I know few choruses. CELTIC FROST was a band that I had seen before, but not really since the sound blew at the club so we had to leave; I only saw 4 tracks. BRAND NEW SIN well lets not talk about them. I was excited nonetheless for an evening of metal debauchery.
BRAND NEW SIN is something I will discuss only briefly since I couldn't stand them. They are a like a bad version of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. The lead singer just wants to be Zakk a little too badly and the overall the music is just a bunch of mush. To accurately describe this band would be BLS on lots of heroin or something because they just lack the extra something where BLS soars.
The lights dimmed so the room was extra black for the most evil people in attendance of evening CELTIC FROST. Now the last time I saw them play I didn't even write a review of it since they only played four songs before the sound blew. This time their bassist came out and did a speech about religion and this and that overall it was very boring, but very kvlt, lol. The opened with Procreation of the Wicked, which many people knew and totally getting into which was very nice to see since I heard many people talking before the show that had no idea who CELTIC FROST was. I am not really familiar with their track titles either nor did they really announce them, but I do they played Ground and Usurper as well. Their overall performance was mediocre to good. The musicianship was there for sure, but the overall stage presence was lacking big time. They were pretty boring in all actuality.
I had seen TYPE O once before, but it was a very depressing evening since we drove 4 hours to see MOONSPELL open for them a few years back and we were late, but decided to stay for the rest even though we didn't really care. This time though I was ready for TYPE O exclusively and Peter axe in hand had my full attention. Their set was very nice, and I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I wasn?t overly familiar with their material. Songs such as Christian Woman and Halloween In Heaven, which Peter revealed to us was written for Dimebag, littered the set list along with the typical closer of Black No. 1. Their overall performance was great they moved around as much as you could expect a band like this to as well trying to get some crowd involvement definitely helped get some people moving.
TYPE O is known for having an odd sense of humor and before they even took the stage it was in full effect with the music in between bands being nothing but the chicken dance song from weddings. The other weird thing they did was they did 3 encores, 2 songs, 1 song, and then 1 song. In between each break they had light up signs on the stage that said, You Suck, Laughter, Applause, and Boowhich the audience provided the action for each time they lit up. I would recommend a TYPE O show to anyone that enjoys some slower more dark tunes and also knows how to have a good laugh.
