I didn't even know this Powerage Records until I found out that this is the label that released the latest awesome VIKING SKULL album, and when you get to know a label by such a release you can have only a good opinion about it. So, here come LETHARGY, another band that has signed to this label to release its new album entitled Purification. If it sounds like VIKING SKULL's Doom, Gloom, Heartache & Whiskey I guess that this review won't be much of a trouble...
The band hails from Neath, South Wales, the band comes out of the blue to rock our socks off (god how I live this expression). Being alive and kicking since 2000, the band debuted with its self financed Road Out Of Nowhere album. If I am not mistaken, nothing has changed since then, and I believe this is due to the fact that LETHARGY's members are childhood friends and they have this band since the time they were still students.
So, is LETHARGY's music Stoner? It has some Stoner elements but it is definitely not Stoner. Hmmm, maybe Heavy Metal? No, there is some Heavy Metal in here but that's not how you could call them. Maybe Grunge? I can listen to their Grunge outbreaks but for fuck's sake this is not a Grunge band. Let me see... What if they are a Rock & Roll act? Getting close, but still haven't found the answer...
It was so fucking easy! They are a mixture of all the aforementioned genres! These Welsh guys almost drove me crazy! They managed to dress their classic hard rocking style with Stoner's groove, Grunge's modern attitude and Heavy Metal's macho ass kicking. They almost deceived me. The fact is that their heavy sounding shredding and the pretty good and solid rhythm section were surely a pleasant surprise for me. To have a band raise its middle finger right in your face for not having discovered them is surely a big surprise! What if you add Phil's totally Chris Cornell meets Daniel Johns style of singing and imagine a heavy and clear sound?
I guess that I proved my point. LETHARGY are not here to present you the groundbreaking album of the year, but they definitely offer you a nice, heavy and dynamic album that you will definitely enjoy. Check them out.
