Artificial Insanity
Triskelyon
TRISKELYON hailing from St. Johns, Canada were formed in 2021 as a studio project by Geoff Weye. The Thrash Metal outfit released one EP and one full-length albums so far. Their sophomore album "Artificial Insanity" has a length of about 47 minutes, and it was released via US Black and Death Metal specialists Moribound Records. The album includes many guest musicians. Among the guest vocalists were Amanda Jackman (CATEGORY VI); Armin Kamal (INFRARED), Cara McCutchen (MORTILLERY), Dale Drew (SEA DOGS), Des Mason, Elim, Raul Alvarez (DARK ORDER-AUS) and Tim Tymo (TYMO). Dwayne Pike, Keith Jackson (CATEGORY VI), and Darrin Pope helped on bass. Besides Raul Marques, Alexander Raykov took over the duties on the drums.
The multi-musician album starts with a traditional Thrash Metal song. After an extended instrumental opening lead by the guitars, "Tektyranny" transitions into a fast track with tight guitar riffing. There is a lot of technicality throughout the track with the lead guitars having a large impact on the overall sound of the song. The vocals are harsh male vocals around the medium end of the vocal range, with little tonal shifts in either direction. "Tektyranny" has not the classical verse/chorus structure, it has a bit more complexity in its textures. "At War With Demons" continues with the frantic Thrash Metal assault. The vocals are very different and have the classical, highly pitched 80s vibes including those siren type of screams. The guitar riffing is very direct and aggressive, less playful compared to the opener and the drumming contains more double-bass drumming. "Bringers Of Chaos" is the first mid-tempo track. It is driven by the sharp riffing and the crunching riffing. The vocals are performed by two male vocalists most often as a duet. Highlight of the track is the contributing lead guitar solo.
"Is Hope Still Alive" starts with an extended guitar and bass part transitioning into another mid-tempo track. It is another Thrash Metal track with classical 80s vibes, pre-dominantly due to the vocals. The riffing is overly playful at times, with the basslines following the riffing. The best part is the break for the lead guitar solo at the end of the track. "Obsolescence" is another mid-tempo track, which cannot really keep up with most tracks as it lacks dynamic, drive, and aggression. "One Blood" is a track with many tempo and rhythm changes. It has mid-tempo parts, fast verse parts with tight riffing and a lot of double-bass drumming, and chorus parts at a measured tempo with almost ballad-esque features. "One Blood" is a very different song compared to most album songs as it includes some unique features for a Thrash Metal song. "Visionaries" is a mid-tempo track with perhaps the catchiest and most melancholic melodies. The song has a simple verse/chorus/break structure, and both the guitar riffing and the lead guitars are the focal point of the track. "Visionaries" has been released as teaser video and the YouTube link is provided below.
"Beyond The Past" starts with an extended instrumental part driven by the riffing and the crunching basslines. The vocals are mainly higher pitched screams and very different to most other tracks. The track is mostly a bit faster than mid-tempo with a break for the lead guitar solo at a measured tempo. "Celtic Creatures" is a fast song and this time, with a growling vocalist. It is the track with most Death Metal features including a few blast-beats, however, the guitar riffing is too playful and lacks directness and aggression. "Why Burn?" continues with the growling vocals, which gives the track a different dimension. Other than that, the song has its ups and downs, there are some cool parts and there also some parts which cannot quite keep up. The album finishes with the PLATINUM BLONDE cover of "It Doesn't Really Matter", and I have to say, this is one of the album highlights.
TRISKELYON deliver an album with ups and downs. The album has a strong start with classical Thrash Metal tracks and many 80s vibes. I feel that, as the album proceeds, the songs cannot keep up, they lack dynamics, drive, and aggression. Often, the riffing and song structures are too complex. Now and then, there are some promising moments, but overall, highlights are missing. The album is well produced. "Artificial Insanity" has its moments, but is this enough to be a good Thrash Metal album? I am not sure on that.
