A Kingdom Built Upon the Wreckage of Heaven
Outergods
OUTERGODS is an Extreme Metal band formed in the UK. This is the band's debut album, and it has nine songs. "Nocturnal Death" is first. This very short song is mostly about the atmosphere. It almost sounds like a million swarming bees at first, until the vocals screams come in. The music is cold, and sterile, and the experience doesn't last long. "Into the Howling Void" has a more traditional Death Metal sound, with some kick drum speed and dexterous riffing. The music is horridly thick and swampy, and the vocal screams keep it within the color of black, like a void.
"Faceless Entities" is a full-on assault, with all guns firing. Bodies in the way are getting ripped to pieces, as one falls after another. "Tangled in the Cogs of the Northern Nightmare" has a more calculated sound. The riff moves slowly, and powerfully, under a bed of lightning fast drums. This song is a slow crusher, and everything in its path is pulverized to dust. "Abandoned at the Centre of a Celestial Hell" is another short, atmospheric song, this time it is tense, and frightening. They are setting the listener up for "Nothing but a Fetid Worm." It's another heavy, aggressive offering, with putrid tones that stench of death. The guitar solo is totally eerie as well.
"Catacombs of Madness" burns through you like a fire that has been raging for hours, and is fueled by accelerants. The vocals vary from screams to gutturals, and much of the music is deeply dissonant. "Flesh Prison" is a short walk to a gas chamber, and ultimately, your death. The pacing is quick at first, then moves to a slow breakdown. "A Kingdom Built Upon the Wreckage of Heaven" closes the album. It's a lengthy seven-minutes. It's a slow grind at first, wearing you down until your ears bleed from your hot skull. As it continues, it gets even nastier, until the final killswitch is thrown. Overall, I found their sound to be an intriguing mixture of both Death Metal and Black Metal, with some smatterings of Thrash and Speed at times. The mixture is fresh for me, and the band's musicianship is evident as well.
