Bio-Cancer - Revengeance album cover

BIO-CANCER hailing from Athens, Greece were formed in 2010. The Thrash Metal outfit released so far one spit and two full-length albums. Their third album "Revengeance" is the first release after eight years. The album was produced by BIO-CANCER, recorded by George Emmanuel at Pentagram Studios in Athens, and mixed and mastered by Pete Rutcho at Damage Studio in Massachusetts. It has a length of about 44 minutes. "Revengeance" was released via Dutch label Hammerheart Records, which is specialized in Thrash, Death, and Power Metal.

The album starts strongly with powerful riffing supported by the lead guitars and plenty of double-bass drumming at mid-tempo, before transitioning into a frantic verse art at crazy speed, flesh-ripping riffs, and a few blast beats. The harsh vocals are mostly at the higher end of the vocal range and they sound very hectic. The melodic framework of the track is very dark throughout. Highlight is the classy lead guitar solo that gives the song an extra dimension. "Citizen... Down" is the official video release, and the YouTube link is provided below. "44 Days In Hell" starts with a tension-building pre-lude, introducing the main melodic theme of the track. It is a fast track with focus on a melancholic melodic framework. While "Citizen... Down" was slightly chaotic in their texture; "44 Days In Hell" is clearly structured into a verse/bridge/chorus part. The mid-tempo break is epic driven by the guitars and the drums. The lead guitar solo is not very much at the center of the track; it starts after the break and runs a bit beside the song. Main focal point during the second half of the song are the epic parts and melodies.

"Footprints On My Back" continues with the Thrash attack at blistering pace, classical Thrash Metal riffing, and crunching basslines. While the verse parts are direct and aggressive, the chorus parts have again epic melodies. The break is powerful at a measured tempo with melancholy in the melodies, and many twists in tempo and rhythm. The title song starts with playful riffs at mid-tempo and then transitions into crazy speed for the verse part driven by the relentless drumming and the tight riffing. The bridging to the chorus parts switches the pace abruptly to mid-tempo. The first part of the break is very short at a measured tempo, suddenly changing to a blast-beat driven part at frantic pace. The second part of the break introduces again melancholy similar to the previous songs. "Dream Merchants" starts with tight riffing at high pace. It is a very playful and melodic track with many subtle switches in rhythm and tempo. The vocals always go with the melodies, which makes the track very hectic especially during the verse parts. "Dream Merchants", and not only this song, includes many melodic Death Metal vibes. In addition, some IRON MAIDEN inspired lead guitars are the highlight of the track.

"Swiping Life Away" starts epic at mid-tempo and transitions to fast pace for the verse and chorus parts. The riffing is tight again and playful, providing the melodic framework of the track. Verse and chorus parts have a seamless transition, where a short blast-beat attack introduces the chorus parts. Highlight of the track is another fine lead guitar solo. Although the melodic theme of "Swiping Life Away" is similar to that of some album tracks, the song is more direct than others are and therefore, it is one of my favorites. "Underdog (Against The Odds)" is a mid-tempo track for most of the laying time. There are many changes in tempo and rhythm throughout the track, with a lot of complexity in the song structure. It is quite a challenge to follow the song, and in my opinion, it cannot quite keep up with the other songs on the album with exception of the lead guitar solo and the outstanding performance of drummer Tomek S. The album finishes with "Bludgeoning Skullcrushing Nightmare", which starts strongly with powerful riffs at mid-tempo. The song transitions quickly into a high-speed affair with sharp and catchy riffing including many oriental vibes. While many album tracks were more melodic Death Metal than Thrash Metal inspired, here it is the opposite. "Bludgeoning Skullcrushing Nightmare" has written good old Thrash vibes written all over it and highlight of the track is another excellent lead guitar solo. BIO-CANCER go out with a bang and "Bludgeoning Skullcrushing Nightmare" is surely one of the best album tracks.

BIO-CANCER deliver a good album. "Revengeance" is a mixture of Thrash Metal and melodic Death Metal with both genres equally contribute to the tracks. The album is a very fast one and the main focal point are the guitars, the riffing and the lead guitars. The melodies are often playful, sometimes epic and melancholic. The vocals have little versatility and are often hectic. Highlights are the lead guitars and the drumming. The album is well produced. Fans of melodic Thrash/Death Metal will like the album and will be looking forward to some crazy live shows of BIO-CANCER.
