A Pound for the Peacebringer
Spider Kitten
Recorded sporadically over the span of the past seven years, "A Pound for the Peacebringer" delves into a loose conceptual exploration of the elusive pursuit of peace, encompassing various themes such as therapy, drugs, altruism, political movements, religion, and ultimately, the controversial notion of achieving peace through death. True to their signature style, SPIDER KITTEN delivers a thought-provoking and introspective experience that will resonate deeply with listeners. The album has five lengthy songs,
The title track is first. It's a 16-minute beast of a song. The lead-in is slow and quiet. When the riff kicks in, it is impossibly low, and even lower. It sounds like a monstrous worm burrowing under the earth. The vocals are harmonized at first with a smooth passage, but when the grating sound returns, they are harsh. I get a distinct ALICE IN CHAINS vibe here. Around the half-way mark, the sound takes a turn, to a smoky den and with brandy soaked patrons, but the deep sounds returns. "Safe to Drown" is a quick three-minute song, with acoustical guitars and, dare I say it, some hopeful tones. It's a tender contrast to the previous song.
"Bellwether" hears the sound from the first song return. The worm is on the move again, but he moves slower, almost half-asleep. He plods and plunders, digging deeper into the earth, before finally falling asleep again. "God's Song" is another smooth, acoustical number, with more emotions. I love the change of pace from these acoustic numbers to the power of the heavier ones. "Fluid Druid (Float On)" closes the album. It has some wicked psychedelic elements with a very heavy bottom end, and it gradually turns darker, until the closing.
Overall, this was an excellent album. I am constantly amazed at how bands can do this deep with the music, and SPIDER KITTEN was no exception. The heavy dose of drugs can be felt from the onset, and the psychedelic elements are very trippy. I also like the acoustical numbers in between, because they help to break up the band's cavernous sound.
