Avarice
Avarice
This melodic death/thrash band from Denmark came to the fore in the late 2000's as it turns out, the came together in 2006 and had released two demos in the space of the two years they had been active, the first demo was WILL KILL YOU IN TIME in 2007 and the second demo was BLEEDING FROM THE FISTS in 2008. In the early days of the band, they had won the Aaharus Metal Contest and played a number of shows or festivals in their native country of Denmark, plus they had shared the same stage as acts like KREATOR, VOLBEAT, SOILWORK MNEMIC, DAWN OF DEMISE and MERCENARY. The band has been led by ANDERS SINDING on vocals, accompanied by guitarists JENS H. JENSEN & TROELS RASMUSSEN, on bass guitar is EMIL STEPHENSEN and finally on the drums is TROELS LUND SØRENSEN.
After the year of 2008, the band did go on a hiatus for a long period of time and didn't resurface until years later in fact it wasn't until 2021 that the band came back together to emerge back into the spotlight. There was an EP release that same year titled REBORN IN BLOOD and this was released independently by the band as they had not had any ties to any record label even then. However the band have now had the chance to record and now release their self-titled album AVARICE after they released a single BETWEEN THE TRENCHES which is on the album too. So let's go straight into the album as we take a look at the first track which is "Avarice" as we hear guitars and cymbals locking their horns with one another as there is an implosion of black/thrash metal at work here.
This intro track is fairly short to say the least and there are big fast bass tones along with electrifying guitar riffs that do play a solo part a little later on before drums are brought back in. The vocals take one small breath but then we must move onto the next track which is "Between The Trenches" as we hear more of the melodic side of guitars as well as more thrashing cymbal hits before a driving drum pattern goes along with a vocal screech. The contrast here with vocals especially and guitars, is just so well arranged and I can certainly commend the band and production of this partnership. There is almost a hint of metalcore in there too but still a lot of amazing high end guitar playing with fierce vocals stretching the range so far out.
Drums do quicken a good bit towards the end of the track and this does set up the next track very nicely indeed, which is "Slaughter Master" as we hear a true heavy bass tone and drum beat dropping in like a small flame ready to be lit up by sizzling hot guitar riffs and burning vocals as they continue to amaze the listener as before. Stamping authority of drums is just so dominant and vocals literally let themselves loose with various low range screams, as drums then take on a slightly different pattern but guitars and vocals stick to what they know best. Vocals then begin a short but well executed crescendo and we head into the next track which is "Return To Strength", the fourth track off this album.
The next track is fast starter with some thrash injected drum patterns with a quick intro then settles down a bit but still has its time for the punches and bass guitar certainly brings out the drums together with guitars going in sync with drums. Monstrous vocals are heard throughout the track as the track is full of tension and mind blowing blackened thrash metal. Even a slow section transforms back into the beast of burden where all is loose and simply uncontrollable but there are no limits when it comes to this sort of metal genre. "Blood Turns Black" as the track opens with bells tolling with nothing else but then drums disrupt the silence before all other instruments come into play as we hear the vocals crying out for our attention.
There is such a desire for so much more from this band and they can prove this without a shadow of a doubt, killer guitar riffs and shredding vocals are their best way of proving themselves as they do this with 100% commitment. There are two sides of this band of course, as thrash metal guitars and black metal vocals are blended so well together in this track especially. "Punished With Existence" with bone crunching drums and vocals going wild as ever with all systems go here as the inner soul of this track is marked with menacing guitars let alone anything else. There is a lot to like here, certainly the guitars and vocals, but we must not wonder too much as we head into the next track which is "Reaper Comes".
Again just as heavy as the previous track with all but familiar elements at work and they are all just as active, this does increase the momentum and creates a path of continuity which is very well established by this track. There is a more melodic guitar part in the middle of the track and it does stand out as it is well supported by the clashing of cymbals or drum hits. Then a slower section allows drums to fire those double kick hits and such hysteric patterns that have been laying the path of each track. "Consumed By Fire" as guitars open this track and drums are right on the button with bringing themselves in as they have taken the initiative to permit vocals in as they are eating away their words in a pretty violent discord.
Slamming drums of course are the way forward and everything else falls right into place even bass guitar gets a little bit of attention, yet they do provide the tone of the track as always. So we now come to the next track as we hear mellow guitar introducing the next track which is "Overflowing Coffins" but then hail hath no fury as the elements have a very cunning intro to start with. Drums play over a sort of percussive pattern as guitar is laid on top in the instrumental section but once vocals come in there is nowhere to hide for the other instruments as they do what they can to coexist. The tone also of black metal is clear and therefore, the listener can be amazed as we approach the final frontier as the last track comes titled as "Conquer".
There is a melodic guitar part that is sensational and goes a long to impress the listener, the thrash metal manifests itself until the time is right for it to come back in giving the final track a great impact of positivity and cutting edge dynamics as well in all the instrumentation. I would say this track certainly has all the proof that this band can be flexible, as far as blackened thrash metal goes, even the vocals does confirm this and I certainly enjoyed listening to the album. It has its window of opportunity to show dedication and triumph as guitars and vocals are the key instigators at work here driving the whole band with drums setting the pace, an album that shall go forth and bring in new fans of AVARICE, I reckon it will.
