Vomitory - All Heads Are Gonna Roll album cover

Swedish Death Metal icons VOMITORY are back with their nineth album. It is their first full-length release in 11 years. "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" was mixed and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory (FRANTIC AMBER; GRAVEWORM; KATATONIA) at the Swedish Rorysound Studios. It has a length of about 41 minutes, and it was released via US Metal specialists Metal Blade Records. It fells really feels good to still have those bands around which helped to create one of the most respected subgenres in Metal. VOMITORY are surely one of the pioneers when it comes to the Swedish school of traditional Death Metal and the first few moments of listening to "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" feel like a time travel. The title song of the album is simply crushing, aggressive, and brutal. "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" is frantic and played at incredible pace. The growling vocals are mainly at the deep end of the guttural range. The guitar riffing is tight and the melodies are grim with an excellently fitting lead guitar solo embedded. "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" is a great opener and it is the official video release with the YouTube link given below. While "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" was a kick-into-the-face, "Decrowned" is a double kick. The insane speed continues and "Decrowned" adds plenty of blast-beat attacks to it. Despite all the speed and aggression, "Decrowned" maintains a clear melodic framework and the riffing during the mid-tempo break even has a few catchy moments. That does not long for last as the bridge after the break is pure chaos and destruction.

"Ode To The Meat Saw" has a short pre-lude at a measured tempo with a few oriental vibes and then transitioning into mid-tempo verse part at a head-banging rhythm. The tempo for the bridge and the chorus part is once again raised, with riffs for the bridge being very direct and simple, while the riffing for the chorus is tight. The melodies of the pre-lude are maintained throughout the track and during the break for the lead guitar solo. "The Deepest Tomb" continues with the insanity of the first two tracks. I thought, it would not go faster than "Decrowned", but it does. "The Deepest Tomb" is a pummeling from the start to the short mid-tempo break and beyond with crushing basslines, flesh-ripping guitar riffing, brutal growls, and relentless blast-beat hammering. "Piece By Stinking Piece" is a mid-tempo track with grim melodies during the verse and chorus parts with subtle changes in rhythm. The break solo is played at frantic pace with blast-beat attacks included. Highlight of the track is the contributing lead guitar solo.

"Raped, Strangled, Sodomized, Dead" is another hammering track right from the start. It is a brutal Death Metal carnage with aggressive riffing, crunching bass, and blast-beat assaults. Despite all this, VOMITORY are adding on top of it a clear melodic path, which is not complex but effective in "Raped, Strangled, Sodomized, Dead" and gives the track an additional layer. "Dead Man Stalking" has a grim mid-tempo opening transitioning to a powerful, but simple and direct riffing where the growling vocals follow the melodies. There are a few tempo and rhythm changes throughout the track, mostly around mid-tempo with exception of the chorus lines that are played at a stomping rhythm. The break includes another excellent lead guitar solo, which is the highlight of the track. VOMITORY mix up their tracks nicely, and after a mid-tempo track it is time for another bludgeoning attack. "Disciples Of The Damned" starts with blast-beat outbursts transitioning into another chaotic track at blistering pace. The melodies are spine-chilling including those of the lead guitar solo. The lead guitar solo is simple and effective without a big deal of complexity. "Disciples Of The Damned" is one of many tracks for the pit, not only because of the speed, but also of its simplicity and directness.

The pummeling continues in "Dead World" with aggressive and direct riffing during the verse and chorus parts. The vocals for the chorus parts are supported by higher pitched background screams. There is a short mid-tempo break for the lead guitar solo, but apart from that there is no mercy for the listener. The lead guitar melodies during the chorus parts, although being more in the background, are providing a chilling atmosphere and add an extra dimension to the track. The album finishes with "Beg For Death", and it is the only song that opens with a short intro, transitioning into an extended instrumental part with blood-freezing melodies. The song is fast, but leans more towards mid-tempo with a few slower twists. It is a head-banger and the highlight is the grim break during the middle of the track and the lead guitar solo. "Beg For Death" is a great way to end the album.

It may have taken a long time for VOMITORY to release an album, but "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" is a Death Metal masterpiece from the start to the end. The sound maintains the traditional Swedish Death Metal vibes, but it adds an incredible pace and brutality to it. It is a pummeling for the listener for most of its playing time and the melodic framework is spine-chilling. The album is very well produced. VOMITORY set the bar very high for all Death Metal releases to come this year. Death Metal fans will love "All Heads Are Gonna Roll" and I would expect the album to be one of the contenders for the Death Metal album of the year.
