Ombreine
Wazzara
From Bandcamp, "Ombreine" focuses on transience, the vanity of being and the destructive power of nature that slumbers within all of us. The discography so far thus reflects the trinity of becoming, being and passing away, which always lies simultaneously in everything. All is flux, nothing stays still." The EP has three songs. "Guggisberglied" is the first track. The opening tones are clean, somber, and partially dissonant, and I like the interplay between the clean vocals and the guitar work. The Doomy sound rolls forward amidst clouds and grey skies. Harsh vocals rear up towards the end. I hear more Doom than Blackened Post-Metal, but that is neither hear nor there.
"Visiûne" has harmonized vocals but some of the chord progressions are unexpected, and odd. Barbara's vocals are sad and lamenting, while the harsh vocals are angry. In the middle, the sound drops, and I wish they would let it ride just a while longer, because it brings dimension to their music. The song ends with a combination of spoken words and clean vocals. "What Lies Beneath" closes the album. It has fat, chunky notes in the beginning, but is followed by a trail of tears and regrets. Harsh vocals carry the sound here, and it is both desolate and hateful at the same time. Cleans come later, and it ends on more fat notes. Three songs...I would have loved to hear more from the band, because these three songs tickled my fancy.
As I mentioned above, some of the chord progressions are, well, just odd. They go places you don't expect and keep any hint of melody from coming through. To be fair to the style, melody isn't something that the listener can expect anyway. Although most of the sound that comes through for me is rooted in the Doom genre, there are other elements present. I would love to hear more from the band.
