Infinity Overture - Kingdom of Utopia album cover

INFINITY OVERTURE was apparently formed in 2005, but this is the first that I've heard of them. Their debut, Kingdom of Utopia, was recently released. Their most notable member is Ian Parry, who is known for his excellent work in ELEGY as well as a guest singer in ARYEON.

When I first heard Kingdom of Utopia I was not very impressed. Thankfully, I gave it more than one listen because it has grown on me somewhat. The sound of this album is symphonic Metal with some power and progressive influences. Parry is fantastic on vocals, as usual. Also notable is MANTICORA drummer Mads Volf, who does a good job on drums but seems a bit more restrained than he is in his main band (for better or for worse).

The female singers are decent, but nothing remarkable. There is a long and involved concept that goes along with this album; it is pretty much what one would expect from a band that plays this type of music. If you are a fan of album concepts, then this certainly will appeal to you, but I feel that concept albums are overused in Metal these days, so I could have done without it. The guitar work leaves much to be desired. None of the riffs really stood out, and the solos all sound the same. Imagine a scales played up and down the fret-board and you have a basic idea of what to expect.

Fans of this type of music will most likely enjoy this, especially because they have such a charismatic singer in Parry. If concepts and keyboards and things like that make you want to hurl, get the bucket ready. Personally, I enjoyed it.
