Allochiria - Commotion album cover

From Greece, comes Post/Sludge Metal band ALLOCHIRIA. They are named after a neurological disorder. Formed in 2008, this is the band's third release. The album has nine songs, and "We Have Nothing" is the first. The opening riff is slow, harrowing, and heavy, and the vocals match it in intensity. The riffs aren't overly inventive, but they are effective at pushing the desolate and raging sound. "9" has a similar sound, with some Progressive elements in the meter. The vocals are absolutely on fire from his diaphragm to his throat, and there are some harrowing passages as well.

"Still Life" has a little more pep to it, with audible bass notes to boot. But the riff and vocals overtake nearly everything about their sound. At one point, the vocals shift to high-pitched screams, and clean guitar tones. "Shedding Character" begins with doleful clean guitars. The mood is grey, and still. The band's more tender side comes out in this song, but the tones of desperation are still very much present. "Ocean" continues with the harsher tones of the previous song. It morphs to a more dangerous sound, with thick bass notes in tow, and the screams grow in intensity. "Interlude" is a short, two-minute song connecting the album to the final three songs. There isn't a lot of sonority in this song.

"Casualties" reminds me of the early 90's band PRONG. The riffs are powerful, and mesmerizing, and the vocal style matches. The clean passages are just as tense and frightening, even though your mind tells you that you are getting a break. "Turning Point" begins with heavy and aggressive tones that slow to melancholy ones, with reverbing bass notes, and spoken words. "Darklight" closes the album. There is a little more melody in this song to go with the brutal aspects. Overall, what this album did best was intensity and even a bit of diversity within the confines of the horrid, mucky sound. Some of the songs had a very similar sound to them however, and that is probably my biggest critique.
