Carrion - Morbid Nailgun Necropsy album cover

CARRION were formed in 2008 and they come from the East Flanders region in Belgium. The Death Metal outfit release their third full-length album. "Morbid Nailgun Necropsy" was mixed and mastered by Kai Stahlenberg (AKIAVEL; BENIGHTED; POWERWOLF) at KohleKeller Studios. It has a length of about 39 minutes, and it was released via Italian Death, Thrash, and Gothic Metal specialists WormHoleDeath. The album has an epic start. "Eradiction" begins with guitar riffing at a measured tempo with almost melancholic melodies. That does not last for long as there is an abrupt transition towards frantic pace, powerful riffing, lots of double-bass drumming and blast-beats, and aggressive growling vocals that are around the medium end of the guttural range with a few tonal shifts towards higher pitched screams. There are a few twists in rhythm including a down-tempo part near the end of the track with low growling background vocals.

"Eradiction" is a good start to the album. "Nematodes" has a very aggressive start with sharp riffing, blast-beats, and screams. The track has a lot of pace, but also a lot of rhythm changes. The riffing is very direct and simple with a few Thrash Metal vibes. The chorus parts are down-tempo parts with an almost stomping rhythm and a lot of variation in the vocals. In general, "Nematodes" is the track with a large versatility in the vocals covering the whole guttural range. Highlight is the lead guitar solo at the end of the track that provides a chilling atmosphere. The title track has a crazy start at breakneck speed. It is a pummeling driven by the blast-beats and the aggressive guitar riffing and it is a kick-in-the-face in almost every aspect, with exception of the lead guitar solo which provides a bit of a counterpoint to the Death Metal carnage. "Genetic Alteration" starts with a grim guitar intro and then transitions into a verse part with powerful riffing and crushing bass lines at a measured pace. It is a more atmospheric track provided by the guitars and it probably covers the full range of different speeds. The fast parts focus more on aggression and there is a frequent switch from the brutal parts towards the bone-chilling slower parts, which include melancholy in the melodies.

"Genetic Alteration" is the official video release, and the YouTube link is given below. "Gingeritis" mixes things up a little bit as the song is more direct with simple and aggressive riffing at high pace. There are a few shifts in tempo towards mid-tempo and a few breaks in rhythm. Highlight of the track is once again the versatility in the vocals of Sven van Severen. "Cofagrigus" continues with the bludgeoning of the listener, although the track starts with a slow and stomping rhythm. That does not last for very long as there is a short transition to a high-speed part. The whole track goes back and forth in terms of rhythm and tempo breaks. The riffing is a bit comparable to that of "Gingeritis" in terms of directness and simplicity. "Mental Vortex" starts with a grim guitar pre-lude, which is slowly building up by including the lead guitars and the vocals and then the rest of the band. The melodic theme during the first half of the track is given by the melodies of the pre-lude. At mid-point, there is a structural shift as the song almost restarts and the blast-beat driven pummeling at frantic pace begins. Within the second half of the track, there are numerous twists in pace and rhythm throughout until the end of the track. It is noteworthy to mention that the track does not go back to its initial melodic framework at all.

"Abaddon's Pit" starts with thunderous riffing and crunching bass lines at a slow measured pace. This is maintained during the first verse part, before the twists and turns in pace and rhythm kick in. The song contains a lot of little different parts, with a lot of variety in the riffing and the drumming. The album finishes with "Forced Into Depravity", which starts once again with powerful riffing and a hammering bass at a slow tempo. The twists in rhythm and pace are introduced in a subtle way and the vocals are again the focal point of the track and offer a lot of variety. Highlight of the song is the contributing lead guitar solo near the end.

CARRION deliver a good Death Metal album. "Morbid Nailgun Necropsy" has a little bit of everything: aggression, speed, darkness, and even melancholy. The versatility of the tracks and the individual performances is the key to this album, and it defines the signature sound of CARRION. It is the constant switch of a merciless hammering and blood-freezing atmospheric parts alongside the versatility of the vocals that keeps the listener on his/her toes. The album is well produced. CARRION arguably release their best album to date and fans of Death Metal and brutal Death Metal will be delighted with the songs of "Morbid Nailgun Necropsy".
