MDXX - MDXX album cover

From their EPK, "MDXX is a band drawing heavily from the epic heavy metal and doom tradition, telling stories of evil, darkness and destruction, focusing on creating a world full of tales in need of being told. The band is inspired by the metal of the '80s, giving it a unique sound in today's scene. MDXX, born in 2020, from the ridden mind of V in the cold, dark north known as Sweden. From necessity after a year filled with death and loss a world came to form and from that world came music and stories now recorded." The album has eight songs.

"Gasbreather" is the first. Smooth electronics open the song, with some background ambiance. The mood is dark, and the song is slow moving at first. An 80's inspired riff comes breaking through the fence. The vocal are interesting...I almost thought they were female. Doom qualities linger long into the song, but some really nice melodies come out towards the end. "Oblivion" is a shorter offering with an eerie opening. The music is oddly pleasing in a couple of ways...first, the melodies are catchy, and second, the harmonies are very smooth. The pace hastens with the lead break, before returning to the opening sound.

"Enforcer" has a heavier sound, driven from a powerful riff that they ram down your throat. Again, the vocal harmonies are probably the best part of the album so far. Even among the Doom elements, they shine. "Decimation" was the first single released from the album. That combination of traditional Metal riffing with Doom just works. The vocal harmonies and lead guitar work is again excellent. "Interlude" is a shorter instrumental with wonderful piano notes and some background ambiance tinged with ominous elements. The spoken words are very prophetic. "Submission" is a slower moving song with plenty of doom and gloom. Vocal harmonies are still present but this song is all about the slow burn.

"Blåkulla" is another straighter Doom song. Again, the chorus is catchy, and that's where the band separates themselves from other Doom acts. The hybrid quality of the band allows them to get away with this. "Sanctum" closes the album. This song has a nice balance between classic Metal elements (namely, IRON MAIDEN), and more traditional Doom elements. The pace quickens after the half-way mark, and those MAIDEN elements really come through. Overall for me, the band have paved their own path with this release. Sure, there are elements of GHOST and even BLUE OYSTER CULT, but the quartet really combines two subgenres quite well on the album, and their sense of musicality comes through. This is a band to keep an eye on for sure.
