Mammon's Throne - Mammon's Throne album cover

From Bandcamp, "Establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the Australian heavy music arena, MAMMON'S THRONE have matured into a fresh exposition of homage to Doom's ancestry, yet sear with cutting velocity and vision amongst the modern day pantheon of riff driven extremities. On their latest offering, Funeral Doom melodies meet crushing Sludge and Death grooves before taking flight in searing blackened crescendos, all accompanied by a chilling and diverse range of vocal styles and furious drumming assault."

Their newest album has five songs. "Return Us to the Stars" is the first. The opening riff is cavernous, as echoes bounce off the adjacent mountains. The vocals are guttural, and leave no hope for anything, and they rage out from the cave they are buried in every now and again. It slows to just solemn clean guitars after the half-way mark, but it roars back. "Beyond" is much shorter, but the general sound continues. As with a lot of Doom Metal, it's all about the riffs. The roar of the vocals is enough to wake the walking dead. "A King's Last Lament" begins with clean guitars and vocals. You can feel his majesty's tears, mourning his lost kingdom. The piano notes are a great accompaniment to the sound. The song has a cold, sterile feeling to it, and the closing acoustical guitars are tense and haunting.

The title track hears the opening riff playing in tandem with the bass. The vocal vary from stalwart, guttural style to raging and burning. The riff segues into a heavier, punishing sound that drains all hope from your body. It picks up with haste around the half-way mark, and return to earlier desolate tones. "Impure" is the final song. The song is exactly as the title suggests...a dirty, filthy riff with snarly vocals and heavy bass notes. There are also some deep effects in the guitars. "I'll take all that you have left, then I'll take your breath" the vocalist declares. Overall, this was a very strong Doom album that borrowed from some traditional elements but also carved a path on its own. The harsh vocals fit perfectly here, and the album as a whole was both raging and more introspective at the same time.
