Pall of Endless Perdition
Unfelled
From their EPK, "Emerging Pagan Black Metal project UNFELLED is rising from the underground to release its debut full-length, "Pall of Endless Perdition." The project serves as a vicious and violent counterpart to its elegant and melodic predecessor, showcasing multi-instrumentalist D.'s impressive musical duality." The album has seven song, and "An Epoch in Bloodshed" is the first. The tones are dark, brooding, and aggressive. There is a thick Black Metal sound in the rhythm section, but it doesn't take over the song like a lot of Black Metal does. The constant snare drum with its loud ping however I could do without.
"The Opposer" is a faster song with more contentious sound, and the rage is dialed up to 10. The background is full of thick, noxious smoke, and it sounds like a summoning spell for a high ranking demon. "Wreathed Wings" begins with another punishing and aggressive sound that slows to an evil groove, full of hatred and hopelessness. "Veil of Perdition" is a mid-tempo rocker again super thick with guitars, bass and drums. The rhythm section bubbles sternly under the vocals, and when released, it is like a maelstrom.
"Transcendent Legacy" is a slower groove still with very weighted elements, and a sense of desperation comes though strong. "Evanescent" is the first real break from the harrowing and filthy sound, showing that D is a versatile songwriter. The calm, clean guitars breathe in and out gently, but a sense of dread still hands in the air. The title means "soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing." "A Diadem Embattled" closes the album. They saved the best for last, because it does indeed sound like a battle between two opposing personalities of the same person, always at war with themselves.
Perdition means "a state of eternal punishment and damnation into which a sinful and unpenitent person passes after death." That is the worse fate for anyone, and the album is aptly titled, because these are the feeling that you get when you listen to it. The Black Metal sound is traditional enough for purists, and adventurous enough for those who want some modern sounds in the genre.
