Big City-Sunwind Sails album cover

BIG CITY is a band from Norway that plays melodic hard rock with metal influences. "Daniel Olaisen" said that he put the band together because he wanted to put his 80's heavy riffs and song ideas into a band and find suitable people to join him. The band released their first two albums, "Wintersleep" and "Big City Life" in 2014 and 2018 with a different vocalist. Permanent bassist "Miguel Pereira" joined the band in 2018, and new vocalist "Jorgen Bergersen" joined in 2019. All of the members except "Bergersen" have experience playing in extreme bands.  "Bergersen" got his start in a "EUROPE" cover band, and the other members liked his vocal style. The new band released "Testify X" in 2021, and have followed that album up with "Sunwind Sails" which was released in January 2023.

"I'm Somebody" starts off with dueling acoustic/melodic guitars and jumps right into classic power metal song, with strong vocals. Nice dual guitar soloing mid-song. "Sons Of Desire" is full of melodic guitars with a more aggressive feel. Superfast guitar solos highlight the song.  "Human Mind" starts with a great instrumental and flows into a mid-paced more traditional rocker. Another great instrumental towards the end of the song. "Collin's Looking For A Hideout" has a more industrial sounding beat with the usual melodic guitar solos.   "Diamond In The Rough" ads keyboards to the mix for a late 80's sounding song, closer to a ballad. Great bass section near the end of the song.

"Now" has very good vocal harmonies in one of the slower songs on the album, reminiscent of an 80's anthem.  "After The Raid" starts fast and doesn't let up. This has more of a thrash feel with several tempo changes. "Sunwind Sails" is the title song of the album with more of a fantasy themed song following the consistent musical pattern.  "Silver Line" again starts with fast guitars and then slows the pace for the vocals that seem to mimic the guitar riffs. The fast guitars return for dueling solos, and then returns to vocals to finish the song.  "Sparks Of Eternity" is the final song on the album, and starts slowly with melodic guitar and picks up speed and vocals through the remainder of the song.

"Sunwind Sails" is a tribute to the 80's bands that Daniel Olaisen loved. The production is top notch with various keyboard and other effects added. All of the musicians are at the top of their game, getting experience in various extreme bands. Each song has unique riffs and guitar solos, while never travelling too far from that melodic power metal genre.Jorgen Bergersen earned his experience in a cover band, and continues supplying strong vocals. If you are a fan of power metal, and yearn for some 80's metal, this is the album for you.
