Downfall of Gaia - Silhouettes of Disgust album cover

From Bandcamp, "DOWNFALL OF GAIA is a dark wall, moving forward relentlessly, enveloping the listener, absorbing one's spirit to take one into the realm of the band's potent sound." This his is their latest album set for release on March 17, 2023. The album has eight songs, and "Existence of Awe" is the first. It has a full, heavy sound with majestic qualities. The riffs build in layers, and the vocals are absolutely horrid. Around the half-way mark, the sound drops to just thick bass notes, and depression sets in. "The Whir of Flies" features a mixture of angry tones with tones of abandonment, and hopelessness. The tones drop again at the half-way mark, with solemn clean guitars, and light cymbal strikes, before coming back to the exhaustive sound.

"While Bloodsprings Become Rivers" is the longest on the album. So far, I don't hear a lot of Post-Metal elements...the sound is fairly straightforward Black Metal, although there are some inventive riffs. The vocals are horrid and tortured, and the song has a hasty quality to it. "Bodies as Driftwood" picks up a similar melody line to the previous song, and the clean guitars and thumping bass create endless skies of grey. The Post-Metal elements come through stronger in this song, because the band lets them breathe. "Eyes to Burning Skies" begins with hushed tones. The clean female vocals add another dimension of sadness to the sound. When the Black Metal sound comes in, it hits you in the face.

"Final Vows" features some heavy riff accents that come and go quickly. Background ambiance and the vocals hold the song together for the most part. This song is deadly, and as black as the pit of Hell. "Unreedemable" begins with a slow and depressing grind, as the title suggests. To be unredeemable feels demoralizing and hopeless. The song dials up these qualities with sturdy, depressing riffs and horrid vocals. "Optograms of Disgust" closes the album. More clean, depressive tones open the song. A fast pace takes over from, there, followed by another slow down. But this one is different...ominous tones hang in the background, and the vocals stay harsh. It's an uphill battle for the subject to the finish line, and for every step he takes forward there are two backwards. Overall, this was a dreadfully depressing album. There was enough variation to keep it interesting, but there could have been more. Although this is a well-established band, taking some more chances could have really propelled the album forward.
