German metalcore band CALL OF CHARON first started out in 2006 and their first release was a four track EP titled Shot. Dead. Drowning in 2007. They did a split album with the band FOR THOSE UNSEEN in 2008 called Unholy Alliance. Following that release the band became inactive due to member changes and problems within the band made it hard for them to tour. The band gained new momentum in 2015 and put out another split album with MORTAL HATRED called The Takeover. Though they have not released a lot of material, the band tried to gain focus on older material by releasing a compilation album in 2017 titled Long Forgotten Memories. After a slew of singles in 2019 the band released their first full length album in 2019 called Plaguebearer. Now just before the start of 2023, the band is back with the same lineup with the addition of Alex Vob on bass, for their new EP The Sound of Sorrow.

The EP opens up with the first single of the release called "The Cleansing". The track is a highly energetic deathcore assault of mixing powerful slams, chaotic guitar work and features two guest vocalists. Jamie Hanks from I DECLARE WAR and Jenni Gornicki, formerly of CONVICTIVE. With the three vocalists, they match the brute intensity and destructive force created by the vicious bass notes and crippling drumming. "In Dying Days" begins with focus on a more melodic and smooth flowing style of melodic death metal before breaking down to a ground shaking crawl. Christoph delivers a seismic performance on the track, and controls the transition of the music as the genres blend together. Patrick throughout the track shows some vocal range with effortless mutations between easy flowing melodic metal vocals and deep sinister roar that settles into the performance of the band.

The track "Verblasster Glaube" features Philip Kaase on bass and is performed in German. Philip also performs additional guitars throughout the EP on various tracks. The song is powerful and carries thunderous pounding drums paired with the hectic melodic assault of the three guitars as the vocals plead for mercy from a silent and unresponsive entity. "No Escape" is a slow and sludgy minute and a half interlude into the final track "One by One". The track opens with static vibrating guitar work and a quickened pace to its interlude predecessor. It is a solid death metal effort to finish off the EP, showcasing the songwriting ability and performance ability that should by now, be putting their name back on the list of influential death metal/deathcore bands in Germany.

The good far outways the bad on this release with solid guitar work between Arthur and Tobias. Speed and creativity along with on point rhythm from the bass and drums reinforce the sturdy metal structuring of the songs. With the positive feedback from their last album Plaguebearer, the band is well on its way back into the German metal scene, and should be gathering steam from a global standpoint if they continue to release great efforts like these. Give this one a try, it shouldn't disappoint.
