Natt - Natt album cover

From their record label, "NATT is a new instrumental band from Bergen. The songwriters behind the music are René Misje and Roy Ole Førland. Misje handles guitars, bass, piano and synthesizers while Førland handles synthesizers. They are joined by bassist Lord Bård and Iver Sandøy on drums and percussion for the studio session." Their debut EP here contains three songs.

"Skillevei" is the first. It's a 12-minute opus. The opening tones are heavy, but also melodic. It settles into a slower groove from there, with some psychedelic elements. Cymbals are in a constant crash mode amidst the dreamy background elements. So far, this is really a sound that I haven't heard before. Rounding the half-way mark, the bass guitar gets chugging and the crashes die down a bit. The sound then darkens, with a bit of tension. The twists and turns keep the song interesting. It begins an ascension towards the end, with tension mounting higher and higher, and it ends on some electronic notes.

"Appell" begins with a jaunty little riff, and some spacey keyboards. Although the sound is pretty smooth, there is still some tension in the air...something lurking beyond the shadows. Layers are added slowly, to the point that you don't necessarily notice them. Turning dark again after rounding the half-way mark, some trippy elements play well with the steady drum beats. Another crescendo builds, and then the song backs off to electronica again. The beastly "Etterslatt" closes the album, at over 20 minutes in length. This is a perplexing song. For much of the song, there is barely anything going on. When some sounds do come in, they are dark, and a bit odd. I wasn't expecting this to be the final sound.

The first two songs were well on their way, but then the final song left some questions in my mind. But, I suppose good music will do that from time to time. This coupled with the very dark ending of the final song wraps up a unique listening experience. The music almost sounds like the band has implanted secrets along the way that you have to be in the right frame of mind to hear. I like this idea, because it means the listener has to work a little to unlock the secrets. This album was strangely pleasing in several ways.
