From Bandcamp, "DRUIDS OF ELD is a Melbourne based project drawing from a range of Melodic Doom, Death, Black Metal and folk influences. "A Day of Sorrow" invites the listener on a journey through death, destruction and sacrifice told through a narrative of ancient lore. The album has five songs.

"Born for the Wolves" is the first. The opening tones are sorrowful, but also rich, much INSOMNIUM. The vocals are uttered; nearly spoken at first, from a deep voice. Harmonies arrive, and the sound expands. Harsh vocals come in from there, and a Doomy sound settles in. "Awakened" has a nice mixture of hopeful tones with tones of agony and despair. Mostly the latter wins out, as you would expect. The clean vocals are elegant, especially the way they are layered, and the music supports the vocals very well. "Druids of Eld" is a short, connecting piece for the second half of the EP. It's harmonized vocals, in a ritual setting...chants of the ancients if you will.

"Sacrifice" begins with clean guitar and segues into more aggressive and heavy elements. The harsh vocals come to life with anger and resolve. Clean tones follow, and the battle between the two rages on. Like any sacrifice, one needs to give something up that is important in order to carry on. The music reflects the weight of the situation. "A Day of Sorrow" closes the album. It opens with a groovy little drumbeat and some clean, harmonized vocals. These harmonies might be the best part of the album...they are smooth, mellow, and very effective. The distorted tones that follow are regal, and commanding, and the album ends on a very sorrowful note.

Overall, I really enjoyed the sound here. They sound like the mighty INSOMNIUM, minus some of the intricate guitar work. They prefer to keep things a little simpler, which can make the album easier to digest. Both the clean and harsh tones are effective at pushing despondent tones into your heart, and you can feel them. Any strong emotion can make you feel alive, whether or not it is a good one or a bad one. That is the beauty of music. Take a step into the grey tones of "A Day of Sorrow."Purchase Link:
