Peste de la Mer
WytchCrypt
From Bandcamp, "WYTCHCRYPT" is the one-man Progressive Doom Metal band of Dennis Montgomery - most well-known for his one-man Prog Rock band. Here, Dennis seeks to combine the influences of Doom Metal, 70's Progressive Rock and the 12 tone theory of classical composer Arnold Schoenberg into something new to explore the genre of Progressive Doom Metal." The album has five songs.
"The Frozen Tombs" is the first. It is definitely and old school sound, with slow, heavy, and simple riffs over smooth, clean vocals that hardly rise or fall much. It plods slowly until the half-way mark, when the heavy riffs drop and some jovial sounds spring forth. The transition back to the slow and steady sound is stark, and seems to come from nowhere. There isn't much dynamism here as the song slowly fades out. "Poseidon" is another slow mover without much really going on. I get that this is Doom Metal, but I don't hear any Progressive elements at all. It borders on boring for me. "The Tale of the SMS Lebensraum" isn't much better. The vocals are pitchy and way too monotone, and the riffs are elementary.
"Kraken" has a darker sound from the main riff, but nearly the same pace as the previous songs. I didn't think this was possible, but the album is getting worse as it moves along. "Plague of the Sea" closes the album; a 15-minute beast. I tried making it through to the end, but just could not muster the strength. Not only does it sound like the other songs on the album, it is just dull and lifeless. I am not familiar with who Arnold Schoenberg is, nor do I completely understand the "12 tone theory," but my ears only pick up on a few tones, and not 12. I would in no way, shape, or form, call this Progressive music. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I don't want to insult the artist so I will just leave it at that.
