Wothrosch - Odium album cover

From Bandcamp, "Inspired by extreme soundscapes, "Odium" is an exploration of the darkest facets of the human condition. "Odium" means: "the state or fact of being subjected to hatred and contempt as a result of a despicable act or blameworthy circumstance." The album has eight songs, and "Child" is the first. Bass drums roll in a slow and groovy grind, followed by deep and dark harsh vocals that vary in their delivery. The overall scene is cold and nihilistic...like nothing matters at all in the world.

"Tumor" is just as frigid, black and harrowing. The guitar work on the album so far is pretty unique, and the band obviously know their way around their instruments. "Disease" begins a stretch of remaining song that are a bit longer. The opening sound is slow and deadly, almost as if you were watching the formation of some imposing creature before your eyes. The features it develops cause you to look away in horror. "Sinner" is another totally scary song. In the beginning, a beast howls, and the sounds of something heavy and metal scrape across the floor. The vocals are hopeless wails of a tortured soul.

"Purge" is yet another slow grind of merciless sounds coming from the guitars and vocals. This isn't your typical Black or Death Metal sound in terms of the common elements of those genres. I mean, the sound is very black, but it's slow enough for the harrowing elements to really develop nicely. "Mass" presents a similar sound, and this far into the album, the songs are starting to run together a bit. "Reign" closes the album. The closing grind is hateful, raging and violent, like endless torture. There is also some BLACK SABBATH "devil's fifth" inspired riffs present as the torture continues.

Overall, the sound was about as black and void as anything that I have heard this year. Although some of the songs sounded similar, it still made an impact on m6. If the band can find a way to vary their sound even a little, they are onto something big. The harrowing sounds will pierce right through your heart and root out your soul.
