A Social Desease
Ivory
From their EPK, "A combination of melody, technique and musical elegance: this is what Ivory wants to be! Their current melodic hard rock has its roots in Turin, at the end of the nineties, when the band proposed its interpretation of the so-called "Italian Melodic Power Prog." IVORY's journey was fraught with difficulties, with numerous line-up changes and an album that never saw the light; only in 2007 the Demo Atlantis Falls, strong of unanimous consensus, leads to the realization of "Time For Revenge" and to a stable line-up." The album has five songs.
"The Hard Trail" is the first. From the opening tones, it has an AOR ring to it. The sound is a little thin from the lack of a big riff, but the chorus and backing vocals are nice. The lead vocals are just a bit pitchy, but the guitar solo was decent. "On the Wrong Side" begins with a trite riff and a bit of thin sound from the guitars. If this is indicative of the rest of the album, we are in for a long listening experience. "The Answer is Love" is a charming song with just the right amount of emotive vocals and melodies. The changing from major to minor chords keeps the sound a bit of a guess, but the chorus shines brightly with hopeful tones...no matter what the question, the proper answer is always love.
"Our Kingdom" is a little livelier in scope, but the riffs fail to impress once again. The bass work is decent, but beyond that, we have four thin songs so far. The lead work is so very predictable as well. "Burning Passage" closes the five-track album. The guitar work is a little better, as they fill in the backing spaces, and the vocals are also a little better. Where they fail is when it comes to the chorus. It just wasn't memorable at all. AOR is a great genre and revival of a sound that was very much in my heart in my youth. But all new bands take notice, please. You need to create something that wasn't done before, or, at the very least, inject some of your own personality into the music, or all that you will have is a re-treaded sound of the past. That is unfortunately what we have here.
