Nidare - Von Wegen album cover

From their EPK, "As of 2019, several members all coming from different Berlin based Post Metal, Screamo, and Hardcore outlets decided to form a band to combine all these different experiences and emotions to channel them within the post black metal project called NIDARE (derived from the old German word "nidar" which means "below"). The sound of the band is constituted by catchy melodic, yet challenging riffs that cover Atmospheric Black Metal, Screamo, as well as Post Metal styles, all played upon blast beat driven drums that are still not afraid to go doomy." The album has six songs.

"Sintflut" is the first. It sounds a lot like Black Metal to me, with some Post elements, mostly in the fairly despondent sound, and the clean interlude. The vocals rage intensely without much compromise. The title track is also quite Black Metal like, especially when you consider the vocals, the wall of guitars, and the ever-present percussion landscape. It does slow every now and again to let some of the Post elements develop, however. "Silhouette" does a better job with the Post elements. The beauty here is wide open and ripe for the taking. Charmingly pretty, it is unabashed in its glory, although the Black Metal tones are still very ardent.

"Unwesen" is more aggressive and harsher. Despondent elements develop until you feel like nearly giving up. Life is torture, pain is torture, breathing is torture. Yet, you plod on the best that you can. "Windspiel" is another melancholy offering, and my more emotional side is piqued. Even the more aggressive elements are wonderfully done here. I have always said, there is beauty in the darkness. It's the combination of major and minor chords here that lays out the waste for you to embrace. "Immer Noch" closes the album. It's another strong combination of smooth, melancholy tones with pile-driving ones. The ethereal elements win out in my opinion.

Overall, I really enjoyed this album. Although it started off pretty aggressively, they dialed it back a few notches and let Post Metal elements ride out longer. The result is a depressing trip through those fears that you have buried deep in the recesses of your mind, and you have to come face to face with them if you want to carry on any further.
