YMIR is a Pagan Black Metal band from Finland. They formed just before the turn of the new millennium in 1998. They released two early Demo's, followed by a long silence. Their debut full-length was released in 2020, followed by "Aeons of Sorrow" two years later. The new album as seven songs.

"Woods of my Past (Aeons of Sorrow pt. 1)" is the first. From the opening tones, this is FWOBM influenced Metal. All of the standard ingredients are present...the wall of guitars, galloping drums, vocal screams, and even the lackluster production (by design I am guessing). A slow decent begins towards the end of the song, with solemn spoken words. "Pagan Swords (Aeons of Sorrow pt. 2)" has a similar sound, although the guitars are a bit higher pitched. But combined with the first movement, they are two songs that sound a lot alike. "Storm of Shadows" features a slower sound, but with no less intensity. There are some changes in pacing here but it still sounds like the previous two songs too much.

"The Pale Ghost of North" is the shortest on the album, at just over four minutes in length. A firey intensity marks the passing of each note, with a wall of sound that is relentless and in your face. "Witches" has a bit more of a sinister sound, if that is possible. The notes play in a pattern that sounds evil, and occult like, very indicative of the title. "Nightwinds" features a slower pace to allow the harrowing elements to fully develop. The sound rolls forward for what seems like forever, and the desperation is dialed up to the point that you almost can't take it. The short "Outro" brings the album to a close, with more tones of despair, mostly from keyboards and spoken words.

I don't mind the FWOBM influenced sound per se, even know of all Metal genre it is one of the more overrun in terms of the number of bands still playing in its style. But bands need to be able to adapt with the times, and yes, that includes "Trve Kvlt" Black Metal bands as well. YMIR just didn't embrace anything new about the scene on "Aeons of Sorrow." Besides a very cool album cover, there just wasn't much inside.
