Wyrd - Heathen (Reissue) album cover

WYRD is a Finnish Pagan Metal one man project by Narqath. At least until 2015, that is when he put together an actual band. He has been going since 1998 and has released eleven full length album to date. "Heathen" is actually his debut, so it does sound feasible that they would consider it for a reissue. I can only suspect that the original is nowhere to be found anymore.

Somehow I find that very comforting, as I can't for the love of the Pagan Gods think of any other very good reason to have this rereleased. Not only is this just one song, it doesn't have anything to entice you in, to excite you, to make you have another listen. The way Narqath has arranged the song is that he starts off with an acoustic part, then (after over six and a half minutes) it all gets a little harder and more direct. No problem, if he would know when you use what kind of voice. He is mixing his clean voice and almost Black Metal screams in exactly the wrong way.

After a while you get another intermezzo, before the distorted guitars come in. They are just about the only reason that he can use the word Metal in his musical description. This is much more Medieval in appearance, or at times you could say rock. It's just when he decides to pick up the pace that it becomes really heavy. But then he goes and destroys any idea you have over improvement by singing off key when using his clean voice. Plus, as a drummer he's a wreck. He is just hesitating too often, as if he's not sure what he's doing.

After a few repeats I can only come to the conclusion that I find "Heathen" to be the most boring record I have heard in ages. And the poor production, the band musicianship but mostly the bloody annoying vocals make this into a heinous enterprise. I know he has made ten more albums, which I find quite a feat after delivering this monstrosity. My only hope is that the other albums can only be better than this one, as "Heathen" is even worse put together than the Monster Of Frankenstein. I always try to finish my reviews on appositive note. Well, here we go: I'm glad this is only one song.  I couldn't have handled any more. I hardly got through this one.
