In This Dying Sun
Scattered Storm
From their EPK. "In This Dying Sun" shows a certain evolution from our previous effort. We never lost track of the bigness, especially with Tue Madsen mixing this record. In our talks, I really emphasized that to him, even though songs are faster, we still want them to sound huge. And boy did he deliver. Sonically this record has been the best one. Tue Madsen also mastered it. We also brought in our new bass player Brian Fausnaugh full fold. He had recorded previously with us in some songs, so It was a no-brainer. Lyrically we still draw from books, movies, series, and whatever draws our attention." The EP has five songs.
"Bloody Love" is the first. Heavy, punishing tones open the song with harsh vocals. The clean passage is better done in my opinion. It's dark and moody, and somewhat ambient. The harsh passages are a little bit more straightforward. "The Process" is a little shorter but no less intense. To me, this borders on Core music, which is fine, it's more of an observation than anything else. There are also some Groove elements present. Like I said, they really nail the ambient passages. In the harsh ones, they rely too much on open chords. "Hollow" features a slower and more calculated sound, with charming clean vocals over a bed of heavy rhythms. The clean vocals are moody, and you can feel them shifting.
"In This Dying Sun" has some groovy elements and a mixture of harsh and clean vocals. The heavy passages are brutal, with heavy accents. The clean vocals in the verses are energetic, and the more I listen to this album, the more I like it. "Seen" closes the EP. It's depressive and angry at the same time, like a man whose mind is gone fluctuating between moments of despair and rage. He alternates between destroying his room and sitting in the corner crying.
Not being familiar with the band, I can't comment on their evolution. But the album shows a lot of promise. One of the harder things existing within the Metal genre is creating music that is harsh enough for the non-discriminating Metal fan to be able to identify with, but also something intimate that separates the band from their peers, and reflects their diverse personalities. They have accomplished that with "In This Dying Sun." The harsh vocals are powerful and commanding, and I look forward to hearing more of those moodier elements in the future.
