Ascends - Lost in Gravity album cover

This is another relatively unknown band. They have fewer than 1,000 fans on Facebook, and no entry on The Metal Archives. They hail from Switzerland, but that's all the information I was able to gather about the band. The album has eight songs, and "Lightrays" is the first. Heavy, aggressive tones and harsh vocals open the song, but not without a bit of melody. The cadence of the vocals borders on rap, but it's a straightforward, punishing song. "Space Drifted" features a slower sound with a combination of clean and harsh vocals. This heavy Metalcore sound isn't something that you haven't heard before, but it's done with an honest and intense energy.

"Solar Flare" features weighted, chuggy rhythm guitars and harsh vocals done with some harmonies. The punishing sound is enough to leave mile-deep footprints in the earth. "Fraxured" has an interesting riff. It's unusual in terms of the key. The harsh vocals keep pushing the envelope until the chorus, when cleans wash over you. The rhythms underneath feature an ever-changing rhythm and this is a great song. "Erased" is a short blast of heavy, emotive qualities. Can you imagine how you might feel if you were erased from existence? He screams, "you're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong!" "Bioshock" features a combination of heavy, weighted accents and some depressive moments to boot. The band shows their musicianship with the way that they stay in unison throughout the meter shifts.

"Swim or Plunge" begins with heavy, dissonant guitars and some Djent tones as well. Some melodies work their way into the sound, but they are subtle and overweighed by the screaming vocals. "Rough World" closes the album. It's a pretty straightforward punisher with some occasional meter shifting. This was an honest effort from a band trying to make their way through the crowd of Metalcore bands which seems to be ever-growing and has reached a point of over-saturation today. As I mentioned, the riffs are ones that you haven't heard before, but they present them with a lot of energy, and their musicianship is also strong. I would recommend this and am looking forward to what the band can do next.
