Keres
Euphrosyne
EUPHROSYNE is a Melodic Black/Doom/Post-Metal band from Greece. They must be new to the genre, because The Metal Archives has bare bones information about the band, and no album entries. "Keres" is their debut album, and contains seven songs. "Black Opal" is the first. It's a short mood-setter, and the mood is sober. Smooth sax notes augment the feeling. "Pale Days" is the first proper track. Black Metal screams are over a bed of thick guitars for a few bars, followed by some softer, more ambient moments with clean vocals. Smooth, somber tones close the song with more depressive sax notes and harsh vocals in the background.
"When My Fears Conquered All" features a combination of harsh and clean vocals, and some nice ambient background elements. Rage rises up quickly, and back to the shadows again. The guitar work is quite well done, and the whispered vocals give it a harrowing edge. "Sister of Violence" is another gut-wrenching, depressive offering that makes the listener just feel totally dejected. The clean vocals stretch out some grey days which seem to last forever. "Sunbringer" is a short little number, with calm and peaceful tones. For the first time in days, you can see the sun peeking through the clouds. Heavy, laden Post-Rock elements come through strong.
"Within the Ages" begins with more clean, sober tones that weigh on your psyche pretty quickly. Then it's back to the wall of sound once more, with passionate, harsh vocals that cut through the air for a few bars. The clean tones return, then it's back to harsh once again. The two styles are locked in a shootout that leaves everyone dead within a mile radius. The title track closes the album; another short and depressive song. In Greek mythology, the Keres were female death-spirits. They were the goddesses who personified violent death and who were drawn to bloody deaths on battle fields. Charming but beautifully gloomy piano note put their stamp on this song.
Overall, I found this album to be an excellent combination of several subgenres of Metal, without one sound winning over the other. Efi has a wonderful voice, both in her cleans and harsh vocal styles. She makes you feel angry at times, and woefully depressed at other times. The music is very well supportive of these feelings a well, employing wistful saxophone and piano notes at just the right times. They have a new fan now and I will be anxiously awaiting a full-length effort.
