From Bandcamp, "LEVIATHAN is a Progressive Metal band formed in Colorado in 1989. John Lutzow is the only original member. Their latest album is presented here, titled "Mischief of Malcontent," and contains five songs. "Unfriendly to Humans" is the first. The opening riff is fairly simple and plays in unison with the bass. The vocals are kind of old school in their delivery, and I feel like I stepped back into time. The lead guitar work is about the same as the riffing...elementary and uninspired. "Dark Side Down" isn't much better. Again, the main rhythms are overly simple, and the song sounds very thin. There is a lot the band needs to do to thicken up this sound. This is pretty bad.

"Rorschach Test" is an eight-minute opus, something that we really didn't need on the album. The sound moves slowly forward, again with elementary riffs. Some light Progressive elements can finally be heard, but they do not make up for the uninspired riffs. The piano notes towards the end are a step in the right direction, however. "Semblance of Self" features a lower and slower riff but the melodies in the vocals do not connect with the music at all. And what is going on in the background? Even more notes that don't fit the music. "The World is Watching" closes the album; a 13-minute beast. Expect more of the same, unfortunately. They experiment with a few different sounds but it was ill-advised.

I remember reviewing the band's previous album, and this is actually a step back from that. The best part of the album might be the singer's voice, or the crafty bass playing. Although Raphael is a good singer, you wouldn't know it, because his style is very mellow and uninspiring. The themes are good on the album, but the music is quite bad.
