Light/Flux
Mythic Sunship
From Bandcamp, "With five acclaimed releases in as many years, Denmark's MYTHIC SUNSHIP have rapidly established themselves among Europe's finest purveyors of Psychedelic Music, bridging the gap between heavy riff worshipping and expansive, free Jazz-tinged experimentation." "Light/Flux" is their sixth, and contains six tracks.
"Aurora" is the first. Smooth, mellow clean guitars open the song, along with some sexy saxophone notes. As it moves forward, psychedelic elements are more pronounced, and I feel like kicking back in a hammock with a smoke on a warm summer day. "Blood Moon" is a shorter track with audible bass notes to go along with the smooth leads. Tom drums play lightly in the background. Being short and without vocals however, the track loses some dynamism that would help to bring it in and out of your consciousness. "Equinox" is another mellow offering with minimal instrumentation, and mesmerizing guitar leads. Although there is some energy in the bass and drums, and some pacing increases, the song never really gets off the ground.
"Decomposition" is a ten-minute opus. The tones are both light and positive, and make you feel good about yourself. The steady sound hangs around for much of the first half of the song, before the tones back off a bit. Heavier and angrier tones develop, and the sax lashes out a bit. "Tempest" is half as long, and features a hastier sound out of the gates. Although there is some variation in sound, in terms of a crescendo, the song is over before it can really develop. "First Frost" closes the album. It's another overly smooth and mellow offering. I am really at a loss for words at this point.
This was a decent album for the style, but many of the songs bled together and featured nearly the same sound. This is one criticism that is valid in any genre. Although the sound was somewhat interesting, you don't want an album of six songs to sound the same. Perhaps of the band had a longer album, there could have been more diversity. As it stands, it is just mediocre.
