Suppuration Morphogenesiaque
Sedimentum
SEDIMENTUM hailing from Quebec, Canada were formed in 2018. The Death Metal outfit released two demos and two splits. "Suppuration Morphogenesiaque" is their debut full-length album and it has a length of more than 38 minutes. Jack Moose (MESRINE; GROTESQUE ORGAN DEFILEMENT) was responsible for the mixing and mastering. The album was released via UK label Me Saco Un Ojo Records, which has a number of Death and Black Metal bands among their current roster. No video has been released so far.
"Suppuration Morphogenesiaque" starts with a hammering! "Krypto Chronique II" is a song at frantic speed, chaotic textures, sharp guitar riffing, crunching bass lines, and growling vocals around the lower end of the guttural range. There is a whole variety of tempo and rhythm changes after a start of utter madness. While the verse parts are those of chaos, there are some more structured mid-tempo parts in-between. The song also includes a darker down-tempo part with a short lead guitar solo. "Krypto Chronique II" gives the direction of the album, as the Death Metal assault continues with "Excretions Basaltiques" in the same way, a frequent switching between down-tempo, mid-tempo parts as well as parts of insane speed. The down-tempo parts sound blood-freezing while the fast parts are a merciless bludgeoning. The lead guitar solo fits into the chaotic framework of the high-speed parts. The slow parts of the track create a unique and grim atmosphere with the guitars and the bass.
The title song starts spine-chilling at a slow and almost stomping rhythm. The overall sound of the guitars and bass during the slow parts reminds me a bit on TRIPTYKON. However, the rhythm does not remain at the slow tempo, it soon transitions gradually into a high-speed hammering. Symptomatic are the many twists in rhythm, which do not seem to follow a specific pattern. Having said this, the title song is clearly dominated by the brute force of the slow steam roller that paves his way through the track. "Funestes Manifestations" has a fast start with powerful and grim riffing, before switching back to a mid-tempo approach. Although there are a lot of tempo changes, "Funestes Manifestations" has clear textures and no chaotic parts. The end of the track sounds a bit unfinished to me, I did not expect the fading out.
"Necromasse" starts with brutal riffing at mid-tempo before transitioning into a slow and doom-laden part. Although the track is played pre-dominantly at mid-tempo, there is also a short pummeling. The lead guitar solo is not overly technical, but very direct and perfectly fits into the dark atmosphere of the track. "Supplices" continues with the same atmospheric patterns, slow rhythm, and darkness as the preceding track. It is a long build up, before changing into mid-tempo and eventually a fast hammering. The riffing is direct and very effective, and the lead guitars do their bit to add to the darkness. The middle part of "Supplices" is mostly at mid-tempo while at the finale, the track transitions back to the initial melodic theme and rhythm. The last track starts incredibly fast and chaotic with abrupt distortions in rhythm. "Un Grotesque Panorama" is arguably the fastest song on the album, although it has also some slow and grim moments during the final part of the track, where in particular the lead guitars are dominant. Altogether a good way to finish the album.
SEDIMENTUM release an album which is certainly not a traditional Death Metal album. It has some unique features like the numerous switches from brutal hammerings towards a more doom-laden and spine-chilling approach to Death Metal. The guitars and the bass are mainly responsible for the SEDIMENTUM sound, I felt that drum and vocal contributions could be more expressive. Overall, the sound on "Suppuration Morphogenesiaque" is raw, aggressive, and dark. The album production enhances the raw sound. SEDIMENTUM deliver something different and "Suppuration Morphogenesiaque" adds a new layer to Death Metal. Death Metal fans will surely embrace the sound SEDIMENTUM offer with their debut album.
