One of Those Days
Helena 'HK' Kotina
It was somewhat hard to find any information on this artist. I had to turn to the Metal Archives, and found she had an entry...great success! The only info they had is that she is a Greek artist, and this is her debut EP. The EP contains just three songs, so I am hoping they are good. The title track leads off the album. Pounding drums and a heavy riff lead off the song, with rich backing tracks. The vocalist has a snarl to his voice, sort of like Russel Allen. The music is pretty basic however, and he doesn't have the range that Allen has. The solo section was pretty good, and it is obvious she can play the guitar well.
"Eve's Decay" is the second. The riff is faster and the sound hastier. Kotina also has some guitar pyro in the first several bars. But whatever energy the song had in the beginning oddly dies at the chorus, as the sound changes completely. The two passages really don't connect. The second chorus is a bit better. "I Will Go On" is the third and final track. It features another decent but overused riff, and if you are looking for something different, you won't find it here. This song borders on the Thrash genre, mostly from the vocalist and the sound in the first chorus. The second chorus is slower and with clean vocals.
Helena is a good guitar player, and no one can deny that. As this is her first EP, you have to give her credit for the effort and for finding a record label to support her. Beyond that however, the songs are just average at best. If she can find a way to put more energy into the music, and perhaps a different singer, I would look forward to future releases. As it stands, it just doesn't offer anything new in the Metal genre.
