From their Bandcamp page, "Alas, that four-song/20-minute EP was but a tease for IN NOTHINGNESS' grandiose debut album, "Black Sun Funeral." The album digs deep into one's heartstrings and utterly possesses with its majestic 'n' melodic surge & sway. Most of all, you can feel the emotion - darkness, desire, death - coursing through IN NOTHINGNESS' execution, which is feverish and loose, given grit by the album's sympathetic production. And, after a mere 40 minutes of magical mesmerism, you'll want to return to "Black Sun Funeral" again and again and again. The album contains eight tracks.

"The Garden of Pain" leads off the alum. It begins with clean guitar tones and an air of melancholy elements. From there, dirty guitars and machine gun drumming take over, with Black Metal vocals. The production is fairly muddy. Some melodic elements rear their head. "Sadness is my Cross" opens with a slower, and heavier groove. The chaos that ensues is thick and angry. But the sound isn't much different than the previous song. "Shadow of Grief" begins with a brief clean guitar passage that leads back to the desolate sound once again. I can't decide if the songs here are more solemn or angry; there is a good mix between the two. I do like the melody once again that runs through the songs.

"The Moon That Never Rises Again" is another song with a clean guitar intro. If they would just use these elements for a bit longer, it would go a long way to keep the music diverse. Instead, they favor more aggressive elements throughout. "A Nameless Grave" opens with, you guessed it, more clean guitar tones. The harmonies in the leads provide just a little diversity here, but again, it's full speed ahead with the brutal and aggressive sound. The bass guitar tones here are pretty nice...meaty and thick. They go well with the punishing sound. "The Last Autumn" is the first break in the sound. It's a short, pensive clean guitar sound with despondent and memorable tones. The title track closes the album. It's more chaos without a lot of melody.

The line between Melodic Death Metal and Melodic Black Metal is easily blurred on the album. The lack of any clean vocals is one contributing factor. Like many other Metal genres today, bands have to work twice as hard to establish their sound. Relying on the sounds of the past just won't cut it anymore. A common misstep, the band has the Death Metal sound down, but didn't develop the melodies enough. There are moments of beauty here, but they are far overshadowed.
