Trolldom - I Nattens Sken album cover

TROLLDOM is an Atmospheric Black Metal band formed in Sweden. Their EPK was missing any bio information, so I had to turn again to The Metal Archives for any information on the band. "I Nattens Sken" is their debut album, and contains eight tracks. "Under Vinternattens Dystra Fullmane" is the first cut. It begins with a full on assault of thickened Black Metal...a wall of guitars, supporting keys, and drums that thunder in the deep. The production is at least decent here, something that is not always the case with Black Metal.

"Ondskans Svarta Broderskap" features another fire and brimstone sound that is husky and massive in scope. Backing guitars and keys fill in the holes, harrowing and burning with resolve. The sound slows to allow all the evil to soak in. Through the first two tracks however, I don't hear much in the way of Atmospheric elements. "Nattens Furste" is another intense track, and the band doesn't seem willing to let up the punches reigning down on your head so fast that you can lose count. The vocals are about as raging as anything that I have heard this year. "Inom Nattens Eviga Rit" is the fourth intense track in a row. In fact, it swells to intensity above the level of a nuclear bomb at one point.

"Nattmörkrets Svarta Skugga" hears the raging, hateful sound continue. Although the song is a little slower, the burn is experienced in the same way...a fire so hot it literally melts your flesh before you can even feel it. "Vid Hans Tron Mörkret Vilar" is another deeply disturbing song that mires in the torture of others. The vocals take on an additional, evil quality with the low end gutturals along with the high pitched screams. "Dräparen av Livets Veke" is another massive blow to the ears, and the composer is not letting up at all. The background elements come into play a bit more, with Symphonic and grandiose leanings.

"Till Ruinens Svarta Rike" closes the album, and it's a beast, at over eight minutes in length. Beginning with some organ notes, it isn't long before the violent tones take over. But this song has some even-keeled elements as well, and the dejected sound towards the end make sure that the album ends on a depressive note. Overall, the intensity of the sound on this album cannot be matched. Many of the tracks have a similar sound, if I can provide some constructive criticism, but the burn of the songs would stick in your throat for years and might last until the end of time.
