Void of Light - Void of Light album cover

Though the EPK contains a lyrics sheet, it did not contain any information on the band whatsoever. Judging by the fact that their Facebook page had just over a hundred followers, I would say that this might be their debut album, or EP. They are described as "Post Metal from Scotland." They also had no entry on The Metal Archives. So, let's get down to the music. The self-titled album contains three tracks.

"Scion" is the first. It opens with a rough sound out of the gate. Harsh vocals surge ahead. The first few minutes sound like Extreme Metal, until the ambient interlude slows things down. At this point, some of the Post Metal elements are more noticeable, as well as some Doom elements as the song winds down. "Harbinger" has another heavy sound in the opening sequence. The punishing elements roll forward through the first half of the song, along with some meter shifts. Another long ambient pause occupies the song after the half-way point, with clean and somber vocals. The atmosphere that builds here is tense and rigid. The hars tones return through the end.

"A Higher Order" closes the album. It also begins with a pushing sound. A heavy, weighted riff combines with harsh vocals in a slow grind of hate and anger. As it moves forward, you can feel the hate growing. The ambient pause comes just before the half-way point as the hate is deflected elsewhere for several bars. Now, you get this end-of-the-world feeling with clean guitars and vocals. The anger resumes for the last few minutes, lashing out with harsh vocal screams and a thick rhythm section.

The band showed some real potential here on their debut album. Most of the tones are about the dark side of life and of being...hatred, anger, frustration, and person with a short fuse. The world of Post Metal can be quite varied but the band here has chosen to focus mostly on these elements, along with some atmospheric ones as well. Three songs are just enough to focus in on what they are trying to get across, and this was a first good effort. There was no youtube video to play, however.
