SHEWOLF is a United Kingdom based band featuring Greek singer The Shaman. Mixing Symphonic, Folk, Power, and Heavy Metal, SHEWOLF create an epic sound that varies wildly, always keeping the listener on their toes. Formed in 2021, SheWolf is their debut record, released March 18, 2022, via Frontiers Music SRL.
The record opens with a gentle intro provided by something like a flute or piccolo. That really sets up the launch into the song. The Shaman uses clean, classical tones for her vocals. Sticking with the wolf theme, "The One You Feed" is a legendary tale about the battle between our own inner good and evil. The tale says the one you feed is the one that wins the battle, so be careful not to feed the hate and negativity. This may be especially poignant in the current social climate.
The strings added to the opening of "Welcome to The Pack," along with that killer guitar groove, make this an early favorite on the disc. Sometimes, a guitar tone just really hooks my ears, and this is one of those. The rhythm is excellent, fast-paced and hard-driving. The layered vocals add a lot of dimensions to the song, making it feel fuller, bigger.
"Home" is a bit slower at the start and stays true to the power ballad template. The tune has a pretty cool riff that drives the song forward with plenty of power, but never going to far and turning the song heavier than it's meant to be. They push right up to that line without crossing over, so the song really has a great kick. They really nailed that stopping just short of over-powering the tune.
One of the more epic songs on the disc is "Safe in The Dark." The riff is really nice and is perfectly paired with the keys. Here, one of the more impressive things is the vocal layering. It blends in with the keys and offsets the guitars beautifully. SHEWOLF does a great job of blending symphonic with melodic and Power Metal. The unnamed backing band really makes all of this work. They are always right on time and definitely on point.
The record wraps with "Fallen Without You," a song that begins gently, with a cool, subdued intro, only to kick in heavy for the chorus. The keys vary between a barely heard support for the riff to stepping up and helping drive the guitars to bigger and better tones. They really placed the keys well on this song.
Overall, this is a really good record. The musicianship is solid, the vocals are really good. The theme is noticeable, so the songs make sense and flow one into the other, giving the record good coherence. This is a band to watch out for in the future. With a debut this good, the future looks bright for SHEWOLF.
