Slaegt - Goddess album cover

Danish Black'n'roll stars return with a fresh set of bouncy good times black metal. The third album from Copenhagen based band SLAEGT has arrived, and it's an immediate hit of fun. Apart from the opening of "Decieved by an Amethyst" this album doesn't really let up. A veritable avalanche of riffs and ideas are so tightly packed into quite a short runtime of 40 minutes it can feel a little like being beaten up (in a good way of course). One of the first things you notice is the high levels of bass in the mix, which can be a rarity in music drawing heavily from the more traditional areas of black metal, and whilst it's inclusion lessens perhaps the frostiness of the overall sound, but it brings in this groove in the low end which makes this really danceable. There's a lot more to offer than just following the root note of the chords here, this bassist can play.

The guitars on this are an interesting prospect, the two players are in no doubt talented, and the have written some incredible riffs that are peppered throughout this record. However it became difficult to think about anything other than, I wish there was more overdrive on these guitars. There's a little lack of power to the guitar tones as a result of this, a touch jangly and dare I say "indie" sounding rather than the stark coldness I'm looking for with this kind of music. This however is not a huge negative point for this album overall, the sound of them may not be totally perfect, but what they are actually playing is damn near close enough. Take album closer and title track "Goddess" for example, you go through about 6 different riffs in the first 1 and a half minutes, each one making you want to whip your neck back and forth.

This album really stands out mostly as a collection of songs, there's less of a flow, either of story or of theme, but the songs that are present are enjoyable. Plenty of ideas are presented, so there is one thing you can more or less guarantee and it's that listeners certainly won't be getting bored. This is an album with a lot of the hallmarks of something which will grow quite a lot on listeners over time, this isn't a game changer, it's not going to appear on any greatest albums of all time lists, but then again nor does it need to, if you are willing to take it for what it is good fun and and not particularly challenging you will likely come to the same conclusion that it definitely warrants further listens
