After the release of multiple EP's and a few singles, Indiana's SYMPHONY OF HEAVEN have put out their second full length album Maniacal Entropik Discordium. The band was started by Pathos as a solo project in 2017 and then became a quartet in 2019. Pathos in 2017 was going by his name LOGAN THOMPSON and released multiple singles and an EP as a solo musician. In 2017 he released the first full length release The Season Of Death. In 2018 he reinvented himself as Pathos and in 2019 the solo act became a full band and released the single "You Shall Be As Gods", followed by four EP's in 2021 and the single "The Song Of September". Here we are now with the second full length release of the band and a live album coming soon.
The album starts off with the track "Soul Retch" and it is eight minutes of pounding Death metal. The guitars are aggressive with the riffs and help display the raw power the band brings to life in this song. The vocals have a heaviness to them in themselves as they come across with a deep growl. The song calms itself towards the end of the track as it takes on a more doom and melodic build up for the ending. "Light Upon The Pillars" doesn't use devastating and explosive riffs to be able to pull off a powerful heavy metal song. The song maintains a fast pace without being mind-boggling and slows itself to carry on with some relaxed acoustic playing with a nice solo overtop. It then becomes the sonic demon as the band rages onwards towards the finish with Pathos' vocals feeding off the energy. The song "To Gaze Upon Destruction" is an eerily beautiful song that paints a picture of destruction very well. It changes tempo at times to complete feelings of chaos, misery, hope and it comes out well in this absolute headbanger of a track. The band is in full form as everything is in sync.
"Entropy" starts you off with some calm and relaxing guitar before thrusting you into an assault with thundering drums and some pounding bass, before once again becoming tranquil. The band uses this recipe of song structure to hammer home the song with force and also shows creative song writing. "Dead Winter Fields" once again will show you the range as songwriters, starting with some clean and Irish folk like vocals before Pathos once again turns the vocals into an emotional howl. The bass is strong in this song and as the track transforms time and time again. A great Death/Black metal track. The start of "The Arch Of Time" fluctuates between an almost folklore vocal telling a tale and demon telling his side of the tale. Changing in tempo and rhythm seems to come easily to the band with the guitars in the track filled with dominant riffs and calming melodies. "Verge Of Annihilation" with some catchy drum beats before transforming into an almost Black metal track that has some keys in the background that match the song and complements the ghastly howl of the vocals. Some cool guitars nearing the end of the track brings a menacing feeling into the track before it ends. The last track I will talk about is "Amid The Righteous Oaks". Starting out with relaxed guitars and symbols before a faster paced melody takes over in this six and a half minute instrumental that showcases once again the well done song writing that exists within the band. The drums and bass hold the song in place and the guitars mutate between a blistering pace and melody that you can't ignore, before ending on a soothing guitar outro.
The band puts on a display of being able to change tempo and rhythm, while mixing in some very creative musical writing. They have a lot of range as for what they can come up with and are not looking to be overly powerful every riff of the way. This is not a short album by any means, clocking in at just under an hour and twenty minutes and they use every minute of it to display an array of metal. This album should be a crowd pleaser for any metalhead that comes across its path.
