Welcome back SEREMONIA, bringing us their fifth studio album, the last seen in 2016, that break creating a great Psychedelic freak rock or eerie rock album. Hailing from Finland, and never hearing them previous to this, I had to dig into their style to know what I was about to listen to, over and over. I found myself trying to understand what I was listening to, and getting lost in the process, only to repeat the album over and over, which is a good thing, when it comes to music right?
Neonlusifer right out of the gate is demanding your attention with "Vaara Valinta" a grungy rock song full of those simple chords that grunge is known for, filled with riffs and lyrics that stand out. Not in a language that I understand or speak, I find it intriguing nonetheless, I found myself listening and trying to decide what they were singing about, furthering my look at SEREMONIA, left me at the same place, unaware of what was the topic, but still wanting to hear more.
"Neonlusifer" the second track on the album, and one I found a video for, had me more interested in what the band was about than the first, again, not in English, it's easy to follow just by the eerie sounds, distorted guitar and all-around grungy Death metal sound (if that even makes sense). "Neonlusifer" takes all the above mentioned and melds them together to create a masterpiece for their genre, new to me, there is quiet a following.
"Unohduksen Kidassa" starts slowly, giving you the thought that its more of a psychedelic sound, but shortly turns into the bands signature gritty grunge rock sound, flowing in and out of both sounds, creating a DOORS feel to the song, the track has more solo time than the others, leading the top of the album for that psychedelic feeling, of getting lost and not wanting to be found.
"Maailmanlopun Aamuna" ends the 8-track album, on a high note, overflowing with sadness, and the dark vocal sounds of Noora Federley, the song wraps up the album well, bringing all the feelings and emotions together.
Although I wasn't familiar with SEREMONIA when I started today, I am now. I'm intrigued by their work, what they stand for and how evolved their music is, by watching their videos, and translating some of their posts to see, it's not all about hate, love or death, much like a lot of the psychedelic and punk of the early 70's, they hit on social issues, and how the world looks to them, without making it about politics, and without forcing it. Neonlusifer is a well thought out album from a band that has so many different styles meshing, and flowing together. It's hard to put them into one category, SEREMONIA definitely do not fit in one category, one could say they cover a variety of styles without trying, which makes their music what it is.
