EWINIAR are a new band from Split, Croatia formed by the couple Katarina and Marin Tramontana. They play Gothic Metal and after their first single release "Years Of Heaven", the full-length debut followed end of 2021. "Burning The Night" was mixed and mastered by Theodor Borovski at the Slaughtered Studio Moskow, Russia. The album is an independent release, and it has a length of about 47 minutes.
There seem to be a tendency to have more and more married couples that form Metal bands particularly in the symphonic/Gothic Metal arena. At least, within one week, I reviewed with STELLAR VOID, ELISADAY, and now EWINIAR three of them. EWINIAR is a bit different compared to the others, since the former two bands are around for years.
The album starts with "Against The Stream" at a measured tempo, classical Gothic guitar riffing, melancholic melodies with added piano keyboards, and above all, the vocals of Katarina Tramontana who leads the song and keeps it all together. The lead guitars have the traditional Gothic vibes and signatures. "Against The Stream" was the first and not the last time that I felt being back in the mid-90s. "Under The Stars" has more powerful guitar riffing and it is a bit heavier and faster towards mid-tempo. The sound and the vocals reminded me occasionally on LACUNA COIL. The overall sound is more direct and especially the lead guitar solo contributes very well to the track as well as the very dominant bass lines. "Years Of Heaven" is another mid-tempo track with catchy melodies. The guitar riffing and the lead guitars have plenty of PARADISE LOST vibes of the "Draconian Times" era. The single release is also available as video with the YouTube link given below.
The middle part of the album is devoted to ballads. "Mother" starts with an acoustic guitar intro and a spoken word passage, before the piano keyboards are taking over. The vocals are slightly deeper compared to the other songs. In general, the vocals of Katarina Tramontana are very diverse and she understands it perfectly to stamp her vocal authority on each song. The song is driven by the piano and the bass lines while the guitars join in during the chorus sections. "Midnight Sun" is a more powerful ballad with the lead guitars and bass leading the track with epic and melancholic melodies with a few Folk vibes, while the keyboards provide atmosphere in the background. "Midnight Sun" is not only impressive because of the almost seven minutes playing time, it is an excellently composed song, where all the instruments including vocals complement each other and perfectly fit to a very powerful song. It is one of the highlights of the album.
After the two ballads, "Suspiria" provides a break in sound and in tempo. It is the fastest song on the album. Gone are the epic and melancholic elements, it is a more modern melodic Metal driven song with heavy guitar riffing and straight forward and direct lead guitars. The vocals are perfectly adapted to the sound and Katarina Tramontana proves again that she is capable of singing different styles. "Until The End Of Time" and "Seekers Of The Sense" are again slower and go back to the Gothic driven rhythms and melodies, where the bass lines and the lead guitars carrying the tracks. In "Seekers Of The Sense", the piano contributes to the track as well. The title song is the last song of the album. It is one of the heaviest songs on the album with powerful guitar riffing and tempo switches between faster and slower mid-tempi. The track has more complex textures compared to the other songs on the album with frequent breaks of the rhythms where the drumming dominates the track for most of the time. "Burning The Night" is not the most representative song on the album in terms of the sound, but a good album closer.
EWINIAR deliver a good debut album. "Burning The Night" has a lot of classical Gothic Metal elements, epic melodies and a melancholic sound, but EWINIAR mix up the sound very well by adding modern elements to their songs. That keeps the album fresh and gives it an own character. The technical quality of all instruments is very high and the vocals are very diverse and it is impressive to hear how well Katarina Tramontana adapts her voice and singing style towards every song. The album is very well produced. EWINIAR have a really good start to their career and Gothic and modern Metal fans will surely dig "Burning The Night" and look forward to the future releases of a very promising band.
