Quantum Evolution Event

ILIUM is an Australian Power Metal band that was formed in 1998 and to date has released 8 full length albums. To my shame I must admit I had never heard of them before I got to listen to "Quantum Evolution Event", which is the fourth EP they have unleashed onto the metal masses. And to put it politely: this is quite good.
The music on this EP is Power Metal with Melodic Death and Thrash Metal structures interwoven into the mix. It does remind me of early CHILDREN OF BODOM, especially as the guitar sounds and the build-up of the songs have a lot of similarities. As far as I'm concerned that is definitely a good thing, as COB has always been a Metal force to be reckoned with.
The EP starts with its title track "Quantum Evolution Event", and right from the first note played the tone is set. Enthusiastic riffs and vocals, surrounded by a very active drummer and bassist make sure that you know that these Aussies are going to rock it like there's no tomorrow. But, however fast they get off the mark, the melodic parts are always keeping up as well. And will do all through the EP.
"Tsetse" has a start that is very much a COB one. Great riff, great sound, very contagious. The big difference with that other band is that ILIUM uses a lot of harmony vocals instead of thrashy ones. That takes a little of the rough edges off the music, but doesn't take away any of the quality I'm experiencing.
"Undergods" is a less intense offering, but still showcases the ability that ILIUM has to make something very much in your face to sound very pleasing and accessible. Although I feel that the refrain is just that little bit too cheesy, or sweet, or childish, whichever you prefer.
"Hostile Sky" starts with a progressive sounding keyboard intro and a very melodic riff before really taking off. It will remain quite melodic in every sense, from the guitar riffs, to the vocals to the atmosphere. To me it is the song that has the least impact on my senses.
Thankfully the last song "Mothcaste" replenishes the feel of heaviness, thrashy structures and intensity. This is another example of how good ILIUM can sound. As it is the longest song on the EP, it makes for a fitting end to "Quantum Evolution Event". Although it's a pity they use a fade-out. As a whole I am impressed with ILIUM, so I will start to try and find out if they have always been this good.
