Beneath the Sod
Beneath the Sod

The funeral procession is led by Ray Keenaghan and the release of his project BENEATH THE SOD in a self-titled EP full of doom and gloom and general creepiness. The opening of this album with "Silence of Lead" is perilous and ominous. It reminds me of what it might feel like to be trapped alone in a damp, dark dungeon. In theory, this is music, but it's more like horror film sound effects. I get serious "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Saw" vibes from this, especially the song "Begotten of Grot." There is nothing musically or vocally impressive going on in this album and it's nothing I would catch myself listening to or referring to as music even though there are instruments being played. I'm not really sure what the purpose of this is other than something that could potentially be used as background music in a scary movie. IF this were going to be used in a horror soundtrack, it would be amazing, but since it's being offered up to me as an album of music that I should possibly listen to as one listen to music, I'm not interested.
A good deal of this album, especially "Rustling of the Spheres," seems to just be noise. Noise for the sake of noise - and it's not pleasant sounding. This song in particular sounds like a bad radio transmission in parts. There was one point where a high pitched sound came in and it actually hurt to listen. Maybe that's the goal? It all just sounds like the horror that would happen if you crossed the event horizon. Typically, I would listen to an album more than once to do a review, but I could not do that with this one. I kept hoping something significant, or good, would happen, but it never does. Thankfully, all of the songs are pretty short so I wasn't made to suffer too long. I guess there are people who enjoy listening to stuff like this if it's being made. I hate to bash someone's work, because it's obviously important to the creator, but it's not for me.
