Well, music ages like a fine wine. And those bands that find the recipe for success are just going to keep using it, but like any good recipe, you can always tweak it slightly to keep it fresh. So how are those Danish Death Metallers DETEST keeping their sound so fresh, their fans happy and putting out new music 30 years after their inception. Well, in December 2021 they released "We Will Get What We Deserve" and today I have the great pleasure to sit down and review it. The artwork is pretty epic, it'll catch anyone's eye I'm sure.
Opening is "This Is The End". What an intro, wow. The strong riffs, and ominous atmospherics put the listener on edge for what is to come. "The Process Of Doom Is On" erupts straight into some brutal Death Metal. Aggressive vocals and riffs batter away against my headphones but the little intricacies of the guitar tracking, the squeals (or are they pings?..) add a depth to the music, along with the guitar break / solo (it is FILTH!!!!). The flow is seamless and natural and to be honest, it's just one hell of a track. I can't wait to see what is next.
"Something You Disgrace" is another fantastic track, with relentless energy and an uncompromising sound it continues the perpetual assault against my headphones and I am loving every second of it. But just take the time to really appreciate how this track, indeed all these tracks thus far have been constructed. Simon, John, and Danni are clearly massively talented musicians, not just in their playing ability, but the technical knowledge to put together such tight and multi-dimensional tracking. It is superb. "Fear Attracts The Fearless" builds from ominous beginnings, layering again to create this delirious wall of energetic and chaotic music that just fills me with the desire to get up and mosh. However, I am sure that my partner and most importantly my cat would not be best impressed if I did. But is that not the mark of good music? It invokes something within you more than just an aural pleasure response to it?
"You Wish" comes from a bit more of a down and dirty beginning, seriously that bass line building into the melodic guitar section? Sublime. This is a theme across the track that continues and that filthy filthy bass line just leaves me wanting a bit more of it. You can really feel the solid foundations that DETEST's music has been constructed on throughout this track and it makes it clear to see how it is so good. As an Engineer, I can confirm that if you get the foundations of something wrong, ultimately it fails. The final track always comes around too fast, but I also find that it is invariably the best way to gauge the strength of a record. And holy hell. "I Always Knew" is just a demonstration of everything that is good about this album. It is fast, hard hitting and just full of bags of aggression from the word go, I cannot get enough and ultimately, the end of the record came about too fast.
Overall, I think you all know where this is going. This album was fucking insane from the outset. It is full of fantastic examples of classic Death Metal with some more modern nuances appearing, along with the DETEST personal stamp firmly locked on it. Really "We Will Get What We Deserve" is an album that has to be heard by fans of Death Metal old and new.
