Superlynx - Solstice album cover

SUPERLYNX is a Stoner Doom Metal band formed in Norway in 2013. A trio, they have released three full-length albums, and now present an EP titled "Solstice." The album contains four cover tracks and two originals. The SAINT VITUS cover of "Born Too Late" leads off the album. It begins with a very slow, pummeling riff along with depressing clean vocals. The riff is so low that the strings on the guitars and bass reverberate as if destroyed. A guitar solo laden with wah-wah plows through the landscape.

"Spread Your Love" is the second cover. It features that low E chord progression of two notes up, and then lays on the open chord. The rhythm has a mesmerizing quality to it, especially at the hands of vocalist Isaksen, whose sultry voice could ignite a group of virgins. "Something in the Way" is a NIRVANA cover. Besides that droning quality of the vocals, the song doesn't really offer much in the way of originality. It's a smooth, dry piece without much in the way of dynamics. "Nature Boy" is a NAT KING COLE cover. Strangely enough, the band is able to really make this song something their own. Still though, THE CARPENTERS meets THE DOORS sound doesn't do much for me.

"Reorbit" is the first of two originals on the album. Like the covers, it's a slow, easy-listening piece that featured almost no dynamism and can put you to sleep. "Cosmic Wave" closes the album. It's a three-minute short piece that features chunky bass notes and a deep guitar rhythm. A little more of this could have gone a long way on the album. I have heard many great albums over the years. But this one personifies everything that is bad about the genre...it's quite boring and unilateral, and one-dimensional enough to render the reader asleep in his chair. The songs aren't even very long...something that can easily magnify this feeling. I have a feeling that this band is capable than way more that was featured on this short album. I think you can safely skip this album for sure.
