Germany and Extreme Metal, these two entities quite often meet one another and put out some truly delectable music (see KREATOR) and sometimes they just put out music (although I don't really have an example for that). But that is one of the beauties of art, it is subjective, the definition of good, bad or even indifferent is down to the audience to make their own decision on its quality. Today, we have the debut, self titled album by VOMIT SPELL, a ten track Death / Grind mix to satiate those with the appetite. The artwork is fairly stereotypical, a gruesome scene and an interesting selection of font that if you squint and look at it upside down, you might just about make out the title.
Opening the record is "Carnage At The Morgue" and carnage is a fairly apt description. The brutal and hard hitting riffs slam against my speakers, threatening to blow them. This track is IMPOSSIBLY heavy, but there is also little nuances, flutters of a softness that teases a delicacy, a single ray of light in the dark if you will. "Axiom Of Annihilation" is a breathless track, at just over a minute, it flies by at breakneck speed. But I can see it in a live setting, with the crowd all joining in unison to 'AXIOM OF ANNIHILATION'.
"DISINCARNATE" is more of a Death style track, with a groovy and bluesy undertone, before the relentless riffs take over, delivering blow after blow of some of the densest music I have heard for some time. All the tracking comes together to form this impenetrable wall of sound, and I find myself more and more losing myself in it and allowing myself to be swallowed into the warm embrace of some superb Death Metal. "Leah Sublime" is another busy track, but there is a clear differentiation between all the parts. I feel, when I close my eyes and listen, that I can see a visual representation of each of the trackings, and it is magical! Something about the track, really hits a chord (no pun intended) with me, it is divine.
"Anthropophagous Inhumation" (try saying that after a night out!) sees out the album to the death in a blisteringly fast 35 seconds. And it is an intense ending, if the track were a film, itd be ending with explosions, car chases and someone being dragged off kicking and screaming.
Overall, I enjoyed the album, there are some absolutely superb elements, "Leah Sublime" for example was a joy to listen to. If this is the debut record, then I will be interested to see where VOMIT SPELL go from here, well done all involved.
