One thing about Black Metal bands that remains fairly consistent...they like to keep their identity anonymous, as well as their EPK's. I had to turn to The Metal Archives again to find out some information about the band. KVRNA is a Black Metal band formed in Australia. "Sempinfernus" is the artist's debut album and contains five tracks.
"From the Shades of Hades" leads off the album. It opens with harrowing subdued screams and some background ambiance. From there, the Black Metal sound is established. The composer handles most instruments quite well, along with the vocals. The guitar solo also shows a musician's adept hands. "...To the Targovistean Night" begins with more harrowing sounds, and if nothing else, the album sure contains a good measure of these. The melancholy opening is followed by a rough and tumble sound from there, with dissonant chords and scary vocals. The sound becomes a bit more solemn as it moves along.
"The Triumph of the Flesh Over the Spirit" fades in slowly with rolling drums and a wall of guitars. Melancholy tones come in from there, with a steady, mesmerizing riff and some lead guitar notes. He builds some atmosphere...some solemn renderings...as if the world is ending around you. "Timeless...Ageless..." opens with an ominous guitar sound with heavy accents. From there the sound begins to round out with despondent tones. The final quarter of the song is done with careful consideration, and to make the music as alarming and chilling as possible.
"The Eve of Eternal Sunset" closes the album. It begins with bass guitar notes and a slow, lumbering sound. The nine-minute opus is meant to slowly drain the life out of you...whatever fight you might have will succumb to the filthy, eerie sound of the final day of your life. The piano notes at the end are also a nice addition to the sound. Overall, Krvna is quite adepts at making frightening music on this album. Though as a whole the music isn't anything that you haven't heard before, the energy and authenticity he brings is noteworthy. It's a promising debut album and I will look forward to his other future offerings.
