Horn Project - Illusions of Maya album cover

HORN PROJECT is a Melodic Black Metal solo project started in 2018, dealing with spiritual philosophical aspects and mythology. The album contains seven tracks. "Child" leads off the album. It opens with clean guitar melodies before transitioning to distorted guitars and harsh vocals. Moving in and out of clean and harsh passages, the melody is kept at the forefront. The clean elements are as somber as they are elegant. The title track opens with some background ambiance and some lead guitars. The harsh passages have a Folky sound to them, and the lead guitar work here is fantastic.

"Kali" also opens with clean guitars and a nice little melody. When harsh vocals come in, the melodies remain. It stays the path through most of the song, and the drums roll towards the end with energy and passion. "Painbody" begins with distorted guitars and harsh vocals. The leads pepper above the main riff in a repeated pattern. From there, the song alternates between passages of melody and heavier sounds from the drums and bass. "Multidimensional Experience" opens with clean rhythm guitars and leads in support. Sit back, and take it in. The transition to harshness however is unannounced. It comes out of the blue. Back to the melody, it just seems a bit disjointed.

"Mother Nature" is more aggressive out of the gates, with thunderous drumming and harsh vocals. It takes a pause for some melody just after the one-minute mark, with clean guitars and a sense of freshness. The guest lead guitarist is one of the best parts of the album...he knows how to lay down a soulful solo. It ends with the gentle crashing of waves on a shore and clean guitars. "Silence" closes the album; a two-and-a-half-minute beauty. If he can continue to craft these kinds of melodies, he is onto something good. It moves the album from somber to hopeful, and as it closes, it makes you smile.

As a composer, Elmar has a good grasp of melody. Amidst the harsh vocals and distorted guitars, he builds pretty little melodies that run through the tracks like a thread through a sweater. The temperance is of course what defines the genre. Overall, he needs the most work in his transitions. They are cut too sharply. Given the display of melody here, the album has potential. He just needs to find the finishing touches.
