I have a few confessions to make. First off, I've never been a massive fan of LEE AARON. Her music was alright, but that was about it. And yes, as a full blooded heterosexual man I did/do recognise her to be a total knock out. On the plus side, she still is. The other thing for me is that I'm not exactly crazy about most Christmas albums, they're often so sappy, so dull. So this should become quite the interesting review.

First off let me say that after listening to "Almost Christmas" a number of times, I have to put your mind to rest: I actually enjoyed this album. And here's another surprise for you: this actually really is a re-release, as this album (minus the last two songs) was recorded in 2020. After just one month they had it finished, but made it only available through her website. Now, one year later, the record company Metalville has taken the courageous step to release it and make it available for everyone to enjoy. And I'll admit it, it's a pleasure to listen to.

The thing that is immediately obvious is the fun that is radiating through every note being played, every word being sung. It seems the band must have had a real blast whilst recording this album. The pleasure is almost palpable. The song selection does add to that feeling, as there are the proper covers of hymns like "It Doesn't Often Snow at Christmas" (PET SHOP BOYS) to the classic "Baby Please Come Home" to a sassy version of LOUIS ARMSTRONG's "Zat You Santa Claus?". Of course the unmistakable SLADE stomper of "Merry Christmas Everybody", but also winding down with the introspective "All I Ever Get For Christmas is Blue" (OVER THE RHINE) and an acapella rendition of JONI MITCHELL's timeless "The Fiddle And The Drum".  She even rerecorded her 1991 hit "Peace On Earth", and it really is a good addition to the album.

But the best songs are the ones I never heard before. Especially opening track "Everything`s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas", plus the new additions "Almost Christmas" and closing fun filled tune "More Fun On the Naughty List" make this into a real treat. So if you want to add to your Christmas albums, but you wish to avoid the usual drab ones, go for LEE AARON, as her "Almost Christmas" will make you wish you had some more time to play it before those days are behind you.
